Life story

Emilee was born on June 18th 2009 to Joseph and Marissa Giamanco. From the moment she was born she had this look in her eye that brought so much grace and joy. She was a clever toddler always finding a way to get into things. You would never be surprised by the ways she got into them. She had a special connection with her sister Natalee and her brother Preston. They were always giggling and finding ways to make you smile. Emilee started kindergarten here in Boulder City. She had some of the most generous friends and teachers that we know contributed to helping us raise such a kind, caring and helpful young lady. Emilee had a ton of extracurricular activities that she enjoyed such as cheerleading, gymnastics and one of her favorites BMX. It was a sport her and her dad really bonded over. Emilee loved hair tutorials and makeup but when it came to BMX riding she was all in. They would get all of their cool riding gear on head over to spend some time together. In hopes of keeping her memory alive, we would like to remind those who make their way by to keep being present and making those special memories with their loved ones.

On January 4, 2021, eleven-year-old Emilee Amber Giamanco went to heaven after a 14-month battle with Diffused Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a pediatric brain cancer, inoperable and terminal upon diagnosis. DIPG is a brain tumor found on a portion of the brain stem called the pons. The pons control essential bodily functions such as heartbeat, breathing, swallowing, eye movement, eyesight, and balance. In the United States between 200-400 children will be diagnosed each year. These children are usually between the ages of 4 and 11. There is still no effective treatment and only ten percent of children with DIPG survive for 2 years following diagnosis, and less than one percent survive for five years.

Emilee’s journey began on November 8, 2019, when urged to have an MRI of her brain after a month of symptoms that couldn’t be explained. We would’ve never imagined brain cancer. After years and years of clinical trials and treatment plans the standard of care for this cancer is nonexistent. Emilee’s pediatric neuro-oncologist, Dr. Nicolas Whipple, of Primary Children’s Hospital of Salt Lake City, Utah, began his search for clinical trials. To participate, Emilee had to undergo a brain biopsy, which confirmed genetic markers that could be targeted for available clinical trials. Our decisions for treatment and medications were never a simple task. We knew what it would take for her to undergo such treatments, but quality of life was always on the forefront of our decisions.

Emilee endured 32 rounds of radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and a clinical trial out of Seattle, Washington. Even with everyone's best, it wasn’t enough. I wish there was a way I could have everyone see her optimism. Throughout her whole journey, Emilee was strong, courageous, and triumphant. She was incredibly tough. Emilee was smart, sweet, kind, helpful and most of all loving. She always wanted to make you proud. We will be forever grateful for our dear Emilee and believe with all of our hearts that she is in the most beautiful place with a very special purpose. Soon enough she will be grabbing our hands and running to show us all of the amazing things she has been doing. Until then, we will live one life for the two of us.

In all of our faith and in honor of our guardian angel in heaven, Emilee Amber Giamanco.
