Katie Leigh Parker
Hi, my name is Kaitlyn Parker. As a 7th generation fisherman's daughter, my life has been deeply intertwined with the gulf and the fishing industry from a very young age. Growing up in a coastal town, I have always been surrounded by the sights, sounds, and smell of the gulf. My family's livelihood and identity have been shaped by the fishing industry for generations dating back to the 1840's. With family names including Strong, Williams, Green, Terry, and Parker.
Being a fisherman's daughter means that I have learned to appreciate the hard work and dedication that goes into making a living from the Gulf. From a young age, I would often accompany my father on his fishing trips, watching as he expertly navigated the waters and hauled in his catch. I would help him sort and pack the shrimp, and I quickly learned the importance of patience, perseverance, and attention to detail.
Being a fisherman's daughter also means that I have seen both the joys and the challenges that come with a life on the water. I have witnessed the thrill of a successful catch, as well as the disappointment of a day with little to show for it. I have seen the pride and camaraderie that exists among fisherman, but I have also seen the toll that the physical demands and dangers of the job can take.
Despite the challenges, however, I am grateful for the opportunities that being a fisherman's daughter has afforded me. I have learned to respect the power of the Gulf, and to appreciate the beauty and diversity of the marine life that my family works to sustainably harvest. I have also gained a deep understanding of the importance of community, as the fishing industry relies on collaboration and support from other fisherman, processors, and regulators.
In many ways, being a fisherman's daughter has shaped my identity and my values. I have learned the importance of hard work, resilience, and perseverance, as well as the value of environmental stewardship and community engagement. As I look to the future, I am proud to carry on my family's legacy, and to work towards a sustainable and thriving fishing industry that can support future generations of fisherman's daughters and sons.
