Life story

Phyllis Schmitt, 78, of Oppenheim, New York, passed away peacefully on Thursday afternoon, October 30, 2014, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, with the love and support of her family surrounding her.

She was born on November 18, 1935, in Jamaica, Queens, New York, the daughter of the late Joseph and Anna (Vacchiano) Berni.

On July 20, 1970, Phyllis was united in marriage to Joseph J. Schmitt on Long Island. They shared a blessed union of almost 44 years until his passing four months ago, on June 27, 2014.

Phyllis was employed as a substitute at Oppenheim-Ephratah Central School for many years until her retirement. She belonged to the Ladies Auxiliary and was also a volunteer member of the Association of Marching Parents for the O.E.C.S. Marching Hawks until her daughter graduated.

She enjoyed fishing, cooking, bowling, bingo and shopping. Her most precious time was that spent with her family and she truly embraced the closeness she shared with both her children and grandchildren.

Phyllis is survived by her beloved children, Jo-Anne Bandes and her husband, Bruce of Florida, Camille Carnevale and her husband, Joseph of Gainesville, GA, Alexander Schmitt of Bethel, NY, Anne Cooper and her husband, Jason of Canajoharie, NY; her granddaughter, Kristie Carnevale and her fiance Martin Hynson; grandson, Frank Carnevale; granddaughters, Alice and Reagan Cooper; great-granddaughter, Brianna Hynson; great-grandson, Jesse Hynson; five other grandchildren; and six other great-grandchildren; her sister, Phyllis Tricarico and her husband, Lenny of Massapequa, NY.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Joseph J. Schmitt; her precious son, Joseph W. Schmitt; her brother, Alfonse Berni and his wife, Linda.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, November 3, 2014, at Miller-Plonka Funeral Home, 30 Wolf Street, Dolgeville, New York, from 5 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Catholic burial will be held on Tuesday, November 4, 2014, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, N. Helmer Ave., Dolgeville, New York, celebrated by Father Qui Vo. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Dolgeville, New York, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband, Joseph.

The family would like to thank Phyllis’ niece, Georgette Hohl for her care and company she gave to Phyllis in the last couple of weeks and to the Szymanski Family for a lifelong family friendship that was shown to Joseph and Phyllis as their neighbors for the last 24 years.
