He loved his son, daughter, wives-partners Brenda and Brenda (2 fantastic ladies), his dogs, family, and friends. And he loved the land… his farms and the land is where Charlie Cropper lived best!!!Charlie had much to live for, but today he’s reunited with loved ones. Charlie, you’ll never be forgotten, never!!! Eulogy
How do I compress into a few words the life of Charlie? I could tell you that he was a farmer, an avid bird hunter, and animal lover, especially hid bird dogs!he was a husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather and great grandfather and he was a good friend. But these titles alone do not define him or explain who and what he was.
He was the result of a living upbringing, was taught by example, raised on hard work and honesty. He was happy with the simple things in life, watching his crops grow, his livestock grazing in the fields, the look of a newly planted crop of tobacco after a rain. Sharing a meal or just a conversation with a friend. He especially loved watching his dogs as he hunted them. He always had more pictures of his dogs on his phone than he did of me!
He spent countless hours driving over the land he had farmed with his father and his son after it came under his stewardship. He was one of the hardest workers I ever saw. He would often tell me and lots of others tat “I’m a worker not a loafer and I was proud when he changed that to, We are workers not loafers!
His work ethic, care and love of the land brought him great joy but that love eventually claimed his life.
In all his stories of growing up on a farm and farming for a living he never complained. All his stories that truly painted a picture of his life were told with humor, love and pride! Even though Charlie loved to tell his stories he was quick to listen or to lend a hand when someone was in need.
What really amazed me and let me know what a unique man he was, was his ability to remain open to friendship and love after the loss of a daughter, a son and a wife. He never complained about his loss, but his grief never left him. Certainly, it did not change his ability to love. To him each day was a blessing and an opportunity to laugh, to make a friend or make a new memory
To me he was the love of my life, a pillar of strength I could count on and a light in the dark. He was my best friend and from the beginning I felt a connection and comfort with him I had never experienced. I will miss him terribly.
We were blessed to have had slmost28 years
together and even though we filled those years with memories and adventure it was not enough. No amount of time would have ever been enough!
To me he was the kind of man whose presence filled a room-not with noise but with warmth, humor and a steady dependable live. He was a man whose presence filled showed he cared through action, loyalty and a willingness to help. Those who knew him will forever remember his quick wit, his hard- working hands and the way he made people feel heard and supported.
Though his absence leave a deep ache his legacy will live on in the people he shaped, the stories he told that will continue to be told and the love he gave so generously. Charlie was a truly good man, and I hope that all of you will share your memories of him with others. All we really leave behind are memories.
My wish is that his memory will remain a source of comfort and strength to all who were fortunate to share his life. I thank God I was one of them. May you, as I will, allow Charlie’s memory be a blessing .
