Life story

On a cold December morning December 18th, 1933, a 10 pound bald-headed baby girl made her entrance into the world. Welcoming her were her parents, Helen Myers and Rollin Clair Gillins of Milford, Utah, along with big brother Lorraine.

Mom grew up on the Milford flat on a dairy farm where she learned the value of hard work at a young age. Although there were never-ending, and early morning chores to do, she also had fun and did her fair share of shenanigans. One of the most famous was at the age of six. Grandpa caught her riding their horse, Dusty Dale- bareback. Now this wasn't just any horse, he was a prime quarter horse racer. Somehow, he knew not to take off with this little girl on his back and was just gently walking around the arena with her. Needless to say, the next day Grandpa came home with "Brownie" and mom now had her very own pony to ride without breaking her neck.

On March 15th, 1951 at the age of 17, she married her high school sweetheart Gerald Stoker in the Manti LDS temple. Not long after dad was drafted into the Korean war and mom was fortunate enough to be able to join him overseas in France where they spent the next year and a half. Many fond memories and lifelong friends were made here and mom talked about it right up until the end. Over the next 12 years. Steve, Lori Jean, Karrie and Annie completed their family along with numerous cats and dogs that mom helped hurry and sneak out of the house when dad got home.

Mom and dad raised their family in Cedar City, Utah where she worked part-time as an administrative assistant first at KSUB radio and then in the financial aid office at SUCU now SUU. She took pride in her work and loved the people she worked and associated with. She helped many students afford college education who otherwise wouldn't have been able to. She also taught piano for many years which was one of her passions. She loved to sit at the piano or organ and sing and play. Unfortunately, thyroid cancer took her beautiful singing voice away but she still did it anyway. She also loved to travel and her and dad and many of their friends were well traveled on many different continents. Other hobbies included reading, gardening, knitting, quilting and camping. Some of her accomplishments were volunteering for the March of Dimes, serving in many different church callings, being PTA president at South Elementary and being voted as one of the Mothers of the Year for Iron County.

In 1996, she sadly lost her oldest daughter Lori to cancer, a trauma which she never recovered from. This, along with a stroke some 18 years ago after caring for her own parents led to her continuing decline. The past few years have been so hard, including the loss of yet another child Steven, a few years ago. Even faced with these trials she always tried to stay cheerful and positive with dignity and humor.

Dad, we all want to thank you along with so many others, you know who you are, for being such a faithful, devoted husband and taking care of mom so she could remain in her home and pass over to the other side in the place she loved most.

Mom left this world in the early morning hours on August 27th, 2022 with Dad by her side. She leaves behind her sweetheart and best friend of 71 years. Her daughters, Karrie Adams (David) of St. George, Annie Yahne (Mark) of Cedar City, daughter-in-law Wendy Stoker (Steve), son-in-law Russell Eyre (Lori) of Cedar, and 15 grands, 31 and 1/2 greats and one great great. Sister Louise McKnight (Bob), brother and sister-in-law Dean and Samantha Stoker and many other family and friends.

She joyously reunited with her parents, brother Lorraine Gillins and wife Nona, in-laws, Owen and Lenna (Billie) Stoker, Barbara Stoker and husband Frank Jones and many other relatives. But most importantly, she is once again with her daughter Lori, and son Steve who she missed so much. What a party they must be having!

Mom, until we meet again, we love you and we'll miss you.
