Life story

When Edward Noice was born on March 11, 1813, in Walberton, Sussex, England, his father, Edward, was 41 and his mother, Phillis, was 28. He married Elizabeth m. Noice Humphries in New Jersey. They had four children during their marriage. He died on November 28, 1873, in New Jersey at the age of 60. Edward's parents were Edward Noice IV and Phillis Potter of Walberton, Sussex, England. Edward and Elizabeth's children were Edward Harrington Noice, William T. Noice, Alice P Noice and Mary Noice. Edward was a scientific gardener in Princeton, NJ. He was responsible for the gardens at Woodlawn. As written in the Princeton's Mythical Gardener, Historian John F. Hageman also noted that Woodlawn was widely known for its beautiful mansion, extensive lawns and forest grove; for its unsurpassed variety of hedges, rhododendrons, Italian walks, and

a display of floral beauty meeting you at every step in passing through the acres of [Field’s] elegant grounds. He threw these open almost as a public park, and the pleasure which the public experienced in passing through them was not greater than that which he experienced in being able to afford such pleasure. Obviously, such a landscape was not simply the product of the taste, knowledge, and financial resources of one man. It would have requiredmuch labor and constant attention. An 1841 article in a horticultural journal noted that Field had “been fortunate in securing the servicesof one of the most skilful [sic] and experienced gardeners in the country, Mr. Edward Noice.”

Noice was born in England in 1813. He was living in Princeton by 1838, probably already working for Field, when he married Elizabeth Humphries. In 1841 he may have accompanied some shrubs that Field sent to a friend and fellow horticulturalist, John Rhinelander, in New York. Rhinelander wrote to Field that “Edward” would be permitted to make cuttings of any of Rhinelander’s plants if he came Noice’s work undoubtedly contributed to his employer’s success in raising prize-winning specimens for horticultural exhibitions. But he also won praise for his own accomplishments. In particular, he was

recognized for his skill at floral design, winning the highest premiums awarded—ten dollars—in 1848 and 1849 for his arrangements. He was successful enough to purchase property. His first acquisition, in 1850, was 32 Edgehill Street, a lot including the stone house now known as The Barracks."
