A fond memory of a day spent with Mom

It was a nice warm day, and the sky was a beautiful blue with a few scattered white fluffy clouds.  Mom had been asking me to drive her to Monroe, Michigan where she had worked for manyyears during my childhood so she could look around and reminisce.  She also wanted to take some pictures of Custer’s Statue that had stood at the center of town for as long as she could remember. I picked her up mid-morning and she was excited to begin the day’s outing. She no longer ventured out too far from home and was much more comfortable with me chauffeuring her around so she could just sit and look out the windows and talk about all she had on her mind and in her heart. We found the large statue of Custer where I located a parking spot, and we began our trek towards the towering landmark. We walked all around it, and she took the pics she wanted. Her smile told it all. From there we drove around and found an old cemetery, and of course you know her eyes lit up and she gave me that look that immediately let me know she wanted us to get out and walk around so she could check out the old grave markers and look for names she might recognize. We walked arm in arm due to the uneven ground and I stayed close to her and let her take her time looking. There were many markers that were so old and worn that it was hard to make out the names and dates. When she had finished looking around and had taken a few pictures, we were back in the car and on the road again. We next came upon an A&W Root Beer Stand, where we found a parking spot and proceeded in for lunch. She got a hotdog and onion rings along with a root beer.  When we left, she bought a half gallon plastic jug of root beer to take home. After driving around for a while longer and looking for familiar sights that she might recognize from years past, we startedmaking our way towards Toledo. We took our time driving home so we could savor our time together as long as possible. She was enjoying and cherishing every moment of our day trip to Monroe and reflecting on good memories of days gone by! As I left the duplex that day, I knew I would always remember how happy she was!  Her heart was full and her face glowed!  I was so glad I had taken the time to spend that day with her!   💜 Rella

Tippy Toe Kisses

This story probably won’t mean much to most, but to me, it means so much. When I moved to Omaha, my grandmother loved watching Antiques Roadshow. I remember I’d go down and watch it with her, and admittedly, be so bored. She was always great at guessing how much someone’s prized possessions were worth. So it became this special bond between us. One evening, I wasn’t feeling like watching the show, but I remember thinking “someday I’ll look back on it and be glad that I sat and watched this show with her” And boy was I right because it was that night that “ tippy toe kisses” became our thing. After watching the show, I told her I was going upstairs. I always gave her a hug and kiss goodnight. This particular night we stood on our tiptoes and gave a peck of a kiss. This time, we shocked each other and we both started laughing. From that night on we called it our “tippy toe kiss” I sure do miss you Grammie! As I write this I’m reminded of the love you gave me and it brings tears to my eyes. Your passion was never ending and it trickles down each generation. I see it in my boys even. I will always cherish our memories and I’ll always remember our last tippy toe kiss. You are still loved and always will be 💜
