Ask me about the empty chair beside me and I'll gratefully tell you about the beautiful boy who should be sitting next to me, the one who taught me how to stretch my love far and wide enough to span the gap between heaven and earth - Angela Miller
Life story

Negwayaab infant son of Shequila Medicine, was loved by his mother and 4 siblings, Ayana, Xey, Aakinsii, and Ataano. We were so excited to meet him. His name "Nagweyaab" means "Rainbow" in our Ojibwe language.

When we were thinking of names for him, his oldest sister Ayana suggested it as he was our healthy baby who made it to the second and third trimester of gestation after mom's last few early pregnancy losses.

Tragically and very unexpectedly, Negwayaab (an otherwise healthy baby) began his journey to the happy hunting grounds earlier than he should have due to lack of medical care at birth. He was born at his mothers work in the bathroom. His umbilical cord ripped as he made his way into this world, and he suffered too much blood loss to survive.

Nagweyaab cried when he was born, just as any normal and healthy newborn would. He calmed down about 10 seconds after mama started talking to him as she tucked him into her sweater for a snuggle and to keep him warm.

When mother was in the post-partum room at the hospital savoring the last moments holding Negwayaab, Mom looked out the window and saw the clouds open up on a brisk and gloomy November day to reveal a rainbow. This is when mom knew what his name would be.

Later on, after mom was done napping still with Nagweyaab in her arms, she woke to see an Eagle circling in the same part of the sky where the rainbow had appeared earlier. This is where his middle name "Migizii" came from. It means Eagle in our Ojibwe language.

His memory of when mom carried him in her and his first and last few cries at birth will forever be cherished in mom's memory.

Nagweyaab is laid to rest next to his maternal great-grandmother, Mary Rose Waln (Jacobs) who loved "little brown babies" and spoke very fondly of them during her time on earth. Mother imagines about how Grandma Mary would dote on her precious great grandson. Grandma Mary will hold him until mom can hold him again.
