Life story

Doris Elizabeth Schilling, 91, of Long Beach, California passed away peacefully January 9 2018.

She fought battles with cancer and overcame her struggles with an amazing inner strength, phenomenal sense of humor, dignity and grace. She was a warm and compassionate woman with a vibrant soul.

Born in Redwood City, California November 17, 1926, Doris was the second child of Marie Alice Borges Olsen and Richard Henry Olsen and wife to her beloved husband Gene Allen Schilling. Her sisters Marie White, Gladys DeFillippi, sons Gene Schilling the 2nd, James Schilling, grandson Thomas Austin and great grandson Shawn Bennett precede her.

She is succeeded by her brother Richard Olsen, treasured children; Geneine Bennett, Helen Austin; Grandchildren, Genena Kriewaldt, Joyce Schilling, John Bennett, James Schilling, Linsie Schilling, Steven Austin, Jamie Austin; great grandchildren Danielle Kriewaldt, Matthew Bennett, Christian Bennett, Jace Schilling, Reiley Ballard, Shain Bennett, Elijah Austin, Alanah Austin, Xander Schilling and great great grandson Shaun Bennett as well as many in-laws, dear nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Doris met Gene Allen Schilling and they were married April 18 1946 beginning a family shortly thereafter. Doris raised a family of 4 devoted children who were the center of her life while she was the steady rock at the center of theirs. Family and friends are the core of who Doris was. Her busy household and dinner table were always open for extra place settings filled with friends and family to sit for a meal. Doris was an incredible cook and loved to make jam too. It seemed anything she made was delicious and bountiful, always saying she "cooked enough to feed an army."

Doris set a great example for all of us, she was always a hard worker and not one to shy away from a challenge. She was a proud woman who believed that there was no obstacle that couldn't be overcome. Leaving a mark on those she met with her quick wit, cheery outlook and wry humor.

She was proud to be a member of Cornerstone Church. She loved adventures with the family, creating many fond memories of vacations, Vegas trips, camping, fishing, watching her family surf, of sandy beaches, warm breezes and sunshine. Doris brought a light heart and joy with her whatever she went. She loved many things; enjoying her coffee time, animals, dogs in-particular and was an avid fan of sports too. She was on many teams and leagues throughout the years including softball and bowling. She would often enjoy cheering on others by going to her families sporting events and watching softball, football and golf on television.

God, faith and family were her most treasured possessions. She loved life, her friends, and she was so very proud of her family. She in turn was deeply loved by all. A legacy of laughter in the face of adversity, her heart lives on in the lives she touched and will be carried forward within her friends, her children, grandchildren and generations to come. We love you with all our hearts and will miss you!

HER FAVORITE HYMN

I come to the garden alone,

While the dew is still on the roses, And the voice I hear falling on my ear

The Son of God discloses.

Refrain:

And He walks with me, and He talks with me, And He tells me I am His own;

And the joy we share as we tarry there,

None other has ever known.

He speaks, and the sound of His voice Is so sweet the birds hush their singing, And the melody that He gave to me Within my heart is ringing.

1d stayin the garden with Him,

Though the night around me is falling, But he bids me go, through the voice of woe

His voice to me is calling.
