Love and Miss you!
Mom, I cannot explain how much my heart hurts missing you. It is a sadness that never goes away. I will continue with how we discussed things before your death. Rest in peace Mom. I know you and Patti are now together.
"Love you more".
Genevieve Mahoney was born a fraternal twin to the parents of Cornelius and Violet Mahoney. Born in Seneca Falls, she was the tenth child alongside her brother, Gerry. Her father, Corneilus, was an immigrant from Ireland and a farm laborer. Her mother was Violet Scharett who worked in a private house. Her father passed away when she was six.
She attended Mynderse Academy and graduated in June 1961. A year later, she married Raymond Barto and had three children, Patricia in ‘62, Brigette in ‘65, and Brian Barto in ‘68. However, it was not to last, as both Genevieve and Raymond divorced in 1975. She moved to her current house in 1986 where she lived until her passing days. She met Bob Parsons and they lived together until his passing.
When Genevieve was a single mother, she attended Nursing school while all three of her children were adolescents. She graduated Nursing school at the top of her class and ended up working at Rochester General Hospital on the Open Heart Floor. Eventually, she worked for the State of New York at Albany Correctional Facility, where she stayed for over twenty years and in time, retired from.
After retirement, she found herself spending much of her time with her family members and friends. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and spoiling her great-grandchildren. Genevieve liked to keep busy and also help out the less fortunate. Every week you would see her at the soup kitchen, helping cook and give out meals to the less fortunate.
She loved playing euchre with her friends and she would often go down to the senior center to play euchre. She played euchre weekly and sometimes twice weekly. It was common for her to have friends at her house playing euchre for a few hours and enjoying each other's time and lunch.
One thing no one could ever doubt was Genevieve’s sense of fashion. It was very rare to catch her without her best lipstick or her hair done up perfectly with hairspray. She loved to look her best and liked to wear the color black, saying it was “her” color.
If one could ask anything about Genevieve, most people would say how adventurous she was. She was always active. From the soup kitchen to outings with the girls, she would always be up to getting in the car and starting the next adventure.
She loved doing activities - quilts, crochet, knitting, cooking, even jewelry making - and would always share her crafts with those she loved. One of the things she looked forward to every week was going out or playing Euchre with her best friends, Ruth, Barb, Fran, and Shirley. She had many exciting adventures with them. She would also drive down to the Finger Lakes area where she once lived, and spend time with her long and dear friends MaryAnn and Carol.
Every year around Christmas, she would always make sure to have a Christmas Eve party, complete with Beef on Wick and Christmas cookies. Many years, she would celebrate twice, flying out to California to spend the holidays with her daughter Brigette and her family in California. Special events would be that much sweeter. She would always make sure to call and message others in New York and those she cared for during the holidays and even when it wasn’t a holiday. She deeply loved her family and friends.
Genevieve passed away due to complications from major surgery on November 12th, 2023. She is preceded in death by her mother, father, nine siblings and her eldest daughter, Patricia. She is survived by her youngest daughter, Brigette, her son, Brian, her seven grandchildren and her five great-grandchildren. Her life was one filled with hard times, yet she always did her best to make the best of it. She lived her life for her family, giving everything she had and then some.
Genevieve Lois Mahoney was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her life was a testament to her unwavering love, resilience, and compassion to her family, friends and community. Her light will be forever missed.
