Donald Wayne “Joseph Joseph” McNeil
“When I hit the lottery…” “Don’t start no shit, won’t be no shit”
An obituary. It has to be one of the hardest things to ever write for someone. I mean how do you sum up someone's life in just a few short paragraphs? How do you unpack a life of 73 years of someone as significant as your father into only words? The answer is you can't. Now, my father was not a man of great importance to his community. He wasn't in a political role for the city or county he lived in. He wasn't in show business or had any sort of fame. But this seemingly unimportant man to the world was held to the highest of importance in our family. He was someone we called when we needed help. weather it was moving from one house to another, or a plumbing or electrical need, he was right there with an answer. He was looked to for guidance, direction, and decision making by most of his family. He was essentially the patriarch of our family. He was the glue that held our world together.
Our lives have changed since his passing with the realization; Life really does go on without him. The man who I thought could never die, did just that. Leaving a huge void in the lives of his family and the friends he left behind.
Christmas, Thanksgiving, and other holidays have lost some of their luster. Every year on our birthdays my mother and father would call to wish us a happy birthday. That silent whisper of a countdown of 1, 2, 3...Happy Birthday! was different the next year. No dad. No countdown. But the noticeable absence of his voice on the other end of the line.
He is missed. Greatly.
