Since you've been gone

Since You’ve Been Gone Since you’ve been gone, I’ve learned to laugh at myself. Since you’ve been gone, I’ve laughed in the rain. Since you’ve been gone, I’ve walked the African savannah, and wandered the quiet countryside of Germany. Since you’ve been gone, I’ve watched my own brother pass, and tried to find a new balance in life. Since you’ve been gone, I hovered over Waimea Canyon — the same cliffs we once looked over together. Since you’ve been gone, I’ve stomped through Kauai puddles during a warm, wild downpour. Since you’ve been gone, I’ve walked beside elephants and watched the sun fall into the Indian Ocean. Since you’ve been gone, I’ve traced the ruins of old castles and held my wife’s hand as others celebrate milestones you’ll never reach. Since you’ve been gone, I’ve faced my fear of heights — the one you always teased me about. And since you’ve been gone, I’ve done all these things, lived all these moments, carried on the best I could… But none of it changes this: I miss you more with each day that passes.

I see you. Ich sehe dich

I see you in the reflections of the puddles. I see you when you were 6 or so holding my hand I see you laughing like it was yesterday I see you chasing your sister and playing at the creek I see your happy face as we trudged off to go fishing I see the glow about you as we bounced across the lake on the wake of another boat. Now I jump in the puddles to remind myself of you. I look down at my empty hand I laugh on the inside I watch my pups running around and see you and your sister think of you when I see a fish I think of you when I'm on a boat But somehow in the end you always make me smile. I See You I see you in the reflections of puddles after rain. I see you when you were six, your small hand resting in mine. I see you laughing— as if yesterday never left. I see you chasing your sister, both of you splashing through the creek. I see your shining face as we trudged off to fish at dawn, the glow around you as we bounced across the lake riding another boat’s wake. Now I jump in puddles to remember you. I look down at my empty hand and laugh quietly inside. I watch my pups run wild and catch glimpses of you two again. I think of you when I see a fish, when I'm out on a boat— when the world feels like it used to. And somehow, through all of it, you still find a way to make me smile.
