“The talents I have are not of me, God writes my songs” Drew
Drew was a simple man, a man that didn’t need a lot to be happy. In first grade the class was asked what they wanted to be when they grew up, Drew’s answer was “happy”. A few years before he passed he said “if I died today, I’d die a happy man”. This was after a late night conversation about our life, our marriage, and our amazing girls. He loved his wife and daughters like God intended!
For his family he was a provider, a comforter, encourager, and stern hand when needed. He became a father at 18, promising his bride to be to always give his children a life he never had, one of stability and structure. He held to that promise all 26 years of fatherhood. Sacrificing his own wants and needs to always meet those of his family. He was a hard worker, one that learned fast and enjoyed taking on new task and challenges. He was passionate about every role in his life, even work. He wanted to give his best in all ways.
His high school sweetheart was the love of his life, and he made sure I knew it all of our days. A few months shy of thirty years together and with me was still his favorite place to be. Holding hands daily, never missing a chance to say I love you, still dating. He wanted our marriage to be an example to his girls, what they deserved and should expect.
Drew loved music, especially rock n roll! He started playing guitar at a young age. He knew he was decent but not the greatest. He once said “even if I was really good at this I would never want to be famous, I’d be away from you and the girls and there’s no way I could do that”. He loved his family to the core of his soul! As he grew in his walk with the Lord and serving in the church his most beautiful service wasn’t serving communion, or driving the bus to pick up the families without rides. It was playing in the praise and worship band. He played guitar, he sang, he wrote songs. He fell in love with praise music. He wrote a few songs of his own. Rock n Roll went to the back burner because he was in love with the Lord and serving Him. He still lived to jam from time to time but he truly became passionate about praise music.
Often when you hear of someone’s legacy their career is the highlight. Drew was extremely important in his line of work as a CNC machine operator, he was dedicated and dependable but his legacy doesn’t lie there. His legacy is in how he loved and how he lived. A bit of a rebel in his younger years, often joked that he was a bad boy but a real good man. There was truth in that! He grew up quick, he took on responsibility with passion and heart.
Although his life was cut way too short, I am grateful he accomplished what he wanted in life, to be happy. Oh he was happy, we were happy!
If you’ve ever attended one of Union Groves Plant Give Aways you too have been loved by Drew. In February of 2021 he came home from work and said “let me tell about the idea the Lord gave me”. He proceeds to tell me
We are to buy plants and give them away to the community. Plants that would feed them! I’ll admit, I thought he was crazy! I said “we can’t do that”. He said, “well the Lord says we can”. So it began! We pitched the idea to the pastor, he too thought he was a little out there but trusted where Drew was headed with this. We hit the floor running (growing)! He said “we are to give people what may sustain them for a season, in hopes they return for what will sustain them for eternity”. With the help of family, friends, and our church family we gave away 808 plants that year. What a success! He passed that September and would never see the seed he planted continue to grow. In my grief, I almost stepped away from the ministry we started on an idea God gave Drew. My girls said I had to continue. I pushed through and I am so grateful I did. I am grateful the girls knew what I was capable of, more than I knew my own self. The ministry has grown leaps and bounds. Giving nearly 5,000 plants away in a single year. I have no doubt God gave Drew that idea because he knew I would need it for my healing, for my girls healing. God’s timing and plan is perfect! We keep Drew’s legacy alive in several ways, the plant give away does that and so much more. He’s still loving on his community.
