Bryanna's Story:
Bryanna Michelle Dugan was born on Tuesday September 5th, 2000, at City Hospital in Akron, Ohio. She was born at 8:18 p.m. and weighed 7 pounds 1.5 ounces and was 20 inches long. From the time she was born, Bryanna brought joy and laughter into our lives and the lives of others. As a little girl, she loved “Elmo”. Instead of cartoons at bedtime, she insisted on falling asleep to shows on the Food Network and Cooking Channel. She enjoyed cooking and baking. She loved swimming, and music, and always wanted to help in any way she could. She loved building snowmen, sled riding, and ice skating in the winter months. Christmas was her favorite holiday, and that never changed throughout her life. As a child, she attended Harris Elementary and Jennings Middle School, before graduating from Cuyahoga Falls High School in 2018. She would later enroll at Stark State - Akron Campus to continue her education in Occupational Therapy, before changing her field of study to nursing.
As Bryanna grew older, her infectious smile never left, nor did her love for music. She had a wide taste in music from mgk to Luke Combs and Morgan Wallen. Her favorite artist though was mgk. She was fortunate enough to meet him on a flight from Cleveland to Los Angeles, and the love affair grew from there. Due to her family dynamics, Bryanna grew up a fan of both Ohio State and Notre Dame football. She loved Chipotle and the “pink drink” at Starbucks. She loved to jet ski and go water tubing. Bryanna loved traveling, shopping, and getting her nails done. She loved wearing Nike. Her favorite flowers were sunflowers. Some of her favorite tv shows and movies were Criminal Minds, Prison Break, Step Up, Hitch, and Save the Last Dance. Bryanna LOVED her phone and was constantly on it taking pictures and videos. If you weren’t paying attention, she would catch you singing, dancing, etc. and secretly record you. The thing that Bryanna loved above anything else was spending time with her family and friends. They were very important to her. Her little sister and younger cousins adored her almost as much as she adored them. She was a natural with kids. It's cliché, but Bryanna was truly beautiful inside and out. She really had it all. She was beautiful and smart and warm and caring. She was outgoing, kind, respectful, loving, funny, silly at times and just simply like no other. She was never afraid to try something new. It was a joy watching her grow up into a beautiful young woman.
She was bright and full of potential. The world was at her feet. Little did we know Bryanna’s life would change on February 17th, 2014, when she was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. We never could’ve imagined only having a little more than 8 years with her from that day. It was definitely a difficult time in her life as anyone could imagine. She made comments about not being able to eat what she wants when she wants. Throughout the years, there were the few scares and hospital visits where she was admitted overnight due to her sugar levels. Over time, it almost felt like it became a burden to her. It was a constant battle, but she never gave up. Through it all, through all the highs and lows, Bryanna always enjoyed life and always lived life to the fullest. Sadly, on December 18th, 2022, Bryanna passed away unexpectedly in her sleep over night due to complications from her T1D. Her cause of death was Diabetic Ketoacidosis.
We will forever miss her laugh, sense of humor, and the sparkle in her big blue eyes. Bryanna was a light who made all of ours a little brighter. We are incredibly grateful to have loved this wonderful girl who has left a lasting impact on many lives. We were so proud of her. Her spirit continues to inspire and remind us of the beauty of life and the importance of cherishing every moment. Her legacy lives on in the memories shared by friends and family, and in the love that continues to surround her name. Our lives will never be the same without her, but we are forever better because of her. Bryanna will forever be remembered, cherished, and loved beyond measure. There has never been a soul quite like Bryanna Dugan, and there will never be again. How lucky we were to share this lifetime with her! Until we meet again – her love will always be a part of us.
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” - Matthew 6:21
We share Bryanna’s story, so her story never ends. In doing so, we hope that it brings awareness to the growing impact of diabetes across the world. We hope it brings awareness to the struggles that people and their families are faced with who live with this horrible disease. We hope it brings awareness that one day leads to a possible cure.
