Life story

Sue Ellen James, 80, of Mishawaka stepped into the arms of her Heavenly Father on Thursday, March 13, 2025, with family by her side. She was born on July 9, 1944, in Cleveland, OH, to the late Charles N. and Mary M. (Miller) Berry, and later married Kenneth Lee James in Niles, MI, on April 15, 1963.

She is survived by her husband Ken and their children Tamela “Tammi” (Ronald) Post of Mishawaka, Diana (Michael) Durrill of Brighton, CO, Anne (Brian) Smith of Romulus, MI, Kimberly James, of South Bend, and Donna (Kamal) Ahmed of Framingham, MA, as well as 13 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. Sue was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter Teresa Lynn James, and her siblings, Charles JR and William Berry, Jeanette Pokrandt, Mary Alice Jester, and Jane Noe.

For 23 years, Sue and Ken served faithfully as full-time missionaries in the jungles of Bangladesh, dedicating their lives to their calling. Sue also served as Director of Heart House, a mission educating and employing widowed Bangladeshi women, offering them hope and independence. Ken and Sue’s love for ministry began years earlier when they first opened their hearts and home to foster children in Mishawaka. Over the years, they provided love, stability, and guidance to over 50 children both here in the US and in Bangladesh.

As a faithful, committed member of First Baptist Church in Mishawaka, Sue served in numerous capacities and on various committees, and loved ensuring that grieving families were cared for by using her gift of hospitality in the preparation of meals for funeral services. Her heart for service was evident in all she did.

Sue was known for hosting large garage sales that brought the community together, forming lasting bonds with people of all ages. Whether in Bangladesh, her home, or her church, Sue lived a life of faith and generosity. She found joy in family and friendships and found her hope in the Lord.

Grandma 💕

My Grandma. I don’t even know where to start sharing about her. Grandma’s are already special but Grandma James was oh so special to me. I am beyond thankful for the time I had with her. My favorite memories include beaming with pride when they shared about missionaries in Sunday School and I was so excited to tell everyone MY Grandma is a missionary! Even though at that time communication was difficult and they were literally halfway across the world we knew we were loved. Then when they came back they moved in across the street. How cool is that!? Grandma being walking distance from your house!? Pop-Tarts were always a better option than the apple mom offered for a snack 😆 and Grandma never said no. I loved holidays with her. Meal prepping and playing games. I loved when she made her Curry and having her teach me to make my favorite Bengali dishes. For a while in high school we served together making meals on Wednesday nights at church for families who were busy and were rushing from work to AWANA. Working in the Young at Heart ministry with her to serve the Seniors in our church. She always opened her home, to Joseph when we first started dating and we would visit Indiana and then to many of my college friends throughout the years. It didn’t matter if it was last minute it was always a resounding YES and she would stay up and chat with them into the evening. I loved going to garage sales and running my grandmas garage sale with her. She had the best little grin and twinkle in her eye when she was being mischievous 😏 She was able to love on my babies and oh did she love doing that. I have never seen her smile more than when she was with her Great Grandkids. We also share our name. It is so precious and dear to me that I carry her name in mine. So much so I passed it along to my daughter. So if you ever meet Gracie Sue please tell her of the amazing woman she is named after. If you met my grandma she shared Jesus with you. She was a missionary through and through. She encouraged me so much in becoming a missionary myself. She loved Joseph and his passion for missions. She sat with me when I cried and mourned not getting to live near my family. Prayed with us over many decisions. She was always there to listen and encourage me to walk in God’s will for my life. She rejoiced greatly when we would tell her of those who have come to accept Christ as their Savior! I will always feel your absence on this earth Grandma but I am so soo thankful I know I will see you again. I love you so much. If you don’t know where you will be spending Eternity I know my Grandma would want everyone who sees this to know the truth of her Savior. I would love to chat and tell you all about Him 💕
