I’m Cool
I felt very cool bringing Caleb up to the production booth with me for the first time. Very cool brother thing.
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? - Romans 8:31
Caleb was born on opening day of deer season, November 19, 2001. While Dad was hoping to get a deer with antlers that day, he was rather pleased to gain a dear son instead.
Caleb grew to be a rather strong-willed, curious child who loved to push his boundaries, always testing his limits. He loved fairness and justice. He was a deep thinker and community minded. His friends said he could tell you the history of straight line, and his family
will tell you he could talk about anything and everything if someone would listen. For hours. And hours. And hours.
Caleb was the guy who would stop and converse with a homeless man, always wanting to know his story. He wanted to serve his country from the young age of six, and he tried to do so the minute he turned 17. For his birthday, all he wanted was permission to sign up as a USMC poolee. When he was medically discharged from boot camp, he took a while to find his next dream. But within months, he was enjoying working for Roebuck Landscaping and dreaming of flying and being a ranch hand. He’d just passed his CPR/First Aid course and signed up for flight lessons at a local airport prior to his death. And he was engaged to Skylar and planning to get married that year. Life was looking up again.
Caleb loved Jesus and playing guitar and had finished writing his first worship song on December 29, 2020, days before his car accident.
He loved his family and friends, and they all knew it.
Caleb loved the United States of America. A patriot through and through. Veterans held a special place in his heart. He was a member of the James F. Byrnes Air Force JROTC and helped organize their first Bataan Memorial March.
Caleb loved planes, Star Wars, Patrick Star (SpongeBob’s cohort), Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Minecraft. He enjoyed music, especially country, Southern rock, and classic rock. He played guitar and some piano. Favorites were Hank Williams Jr., Whiskey Myers, and Earl Dibbles Jr. As well as Led Zeppelin, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Elton John. He loved Ramen Noodles, Zaxby’s, and chicken nuggets. We could always find him up a tree, building with Legos, or playing his guitar.
And on January 2, 2021, his father and I received that most dreaded phone call. Come quick. Spartanburg Regional. Critical.
At 1:00 AM or so, the surgeon’s assistant came to the surgical waiting room to tell his father and me they did everything they could. Too much internal bleeding. Couldn’t get it to stop. His single car accident on a rainy night took him Home to Jesus. And left us with a longing we won’t see fulfilled until we too get to go Home.
