Thank you for your service
Jia served in the armed forces. We honor that service here.
Born in the village of Phub Thoos Xas, Laos, to his parents, Tong Yia Her and Kia Thao, Jia Neng was given the birth name Nkaub. His name was later changed to Txhiaj Neeb (written as Jia Neng in English) in the 1970s when he became a shaman, marking a significant milestone in his spiritual journey. As a shaman and community leader, Jia Neng was known for his compassion and dedication to helping others.
At just 17 years old, Jia Neng courageously enlisted to fight for the freedom of the Hmong people during the Secret War in Vietnam (1963–1975). He served as a soldier in the Special Guerrilla Unit (SGU), a task force organized by the United States CIA to combat the spread of communism in Southeast Asia. Because of his service, Jia Neng was granted asylum in the United States after the war ended. On March 24, 1988, Jia Neng brought his family to America.
Jia Neng was a cheerful person who could light up any room with his contagious smile, laughter, and lively personality. He loved sharing stories about his youth, the war, and the history of the Hmong people. Throughout his life, he found joy in serving his community and, above all, spending time with his loved ones.
