Something is missing in my home, I feel it day and night, I know it will take time and strength before things feel quite right. But just for now, I need to mourn, My heart — it needs to mend. Though some may say, “It’s just a pet,” I know I’ve lost a friend. You’ve brought such laughter to my home, and richness to my days. A constant friend through joy or loss with gentle, loving ways. Companion, friend, and confidante, A friend I won’t forget. You’ll live forever in my heart, My sweet, forever pet.
On October 12, 2022, Harley and I welcomed Brownie into our lives. The journey to the Mercy Full Project in Tampa, Florida, was memorable, with Birdie, our other pet, in tow. The sense of anticipation was palpable; it had been two years since my last dog passed away, and my heart was open to a new furry friend. Birdie, the sole pet in Harley's and his daughter's lives, wasn't known for her fondness for dogs. Yet, I felt prepared for the challenge. After enduring multiple losses, I yearned for the unique companionship and unconditional love that only a dog can offer. We had chosen Domingo, a charming dark chocolate puppy with white patches that Harley had discovered on Facebook. The adoption process was thorough, the most detailed I had ever experienced, but it was well-executed and, I believe, essential for ensuring the well-being of the dogs. The moment I laid eyes on Domingo, excitement surged through me, and holding him brought an overwhelming sense of joy. With a deep sense of commitment, I embraced the responsibility of caring for Domingo more than I had for any other dog before, and we welcomed him into our home. To our delight, Birdie took to Domingo quickly, accepting him as her new sibling. Initially, we named him Rocky, but it didn't seem to fit; we eventually chose Brownie, a name held dear by Harley's family. Brownie was adventurous by day but cautious after dark. His affection for stuffed toys was endearing, yet it led to many being ingested, which worried me about the risk of blockages. This concern prompted us to invest in a comprehensive wellness plan for him. We switched to sturdy Kong toys to satisfy his chewing urges. In his first year, Brownie destroyed every crate bed and even chewed through a newly finished wall. Despite these mischievous acts, he was exceptional on walks and cherished his outdoor adventures. Among all the dogs I've had, Brownie was the most indulged, with a tailored health plan, daycare treats, and an abundance of toys. He was the dog who waited by the window for our return, dashing to the front door with his tail wagging and his favorite toy in his mouth, exuding joy, and eagerness, always ready to play and lavish us with love the moment we stepped inside. Although Brownie's life was cut short, he will be missed by many and remembered always. Brownie made a mark in our hearts, forever we will hold all our precious memories of him. Forever our favorite wiggle butt Brownie.
