You know how they say that the good die young? How it’s always the one that would give the literal shirt off their backs, that seem to pass away so soon? They light up the room, they’re the life of the party, they always pick you up when you’re down? Ethan was that guy! He had the biggest, purest heart. It is no wonder his final moments leading to his passing, were spent helping someone else. Also, that even in death, he was still giving, as an organ donor.
Ethan (“E”) was born on October 15th, 1998. Born with blonde hair, blue eyes & a raider fan! He would come at a time we needed him most. Son to Monica Canedo, baby brother to Serena (Ena to him), he was born in Sac & raised in the Stack(Hayward). He was strong willed from the beginning, catching us off guard by throwing his gloves all the way across the room at two days old.
Ethan was a son, brother, uncle, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend. Furthermore, he was also a role model & father figure. He loved kids & kids just gravitated to him. You could often find Ethan with a child on his shoulders. E was a stepfather to his stepson, as well as Uncle Ethan-like a dad to his nephew & niece, Steven & Nevaeh. He could often be found playing catch with Steven, attending all of his football games & losing to Steven in madden. Nevaeh was his princess. He used to comb her hair before taking her to school, always making sure she was fitted & her “kick game” was strong. He would sing frozen songs with her, while wearing blonde extensions.
He was known for being a huge conversationalist, with the ability to talk to anyone-any age, any place, about anything. I remember him coming into the house one day saying that he started “chopping it up” with the neighbor-fast forward a few years and him & Chuck became inseparable. Talking for hours, working on cars & just vibing. He also befriended Adrian, another neighbor in our apartment complex.
He was notorious for calling loved ones and having hour(s) long phone calls. He had a great sense of humor & loved a good roast session. He was a goofball at times, silly & unapologetically himself. He was also the worst liar I’ve ever met, his facial expressions would give him away every time. That thing he would do with his lips, IYKYK.
He loved his family & friends, as a kid he loved spending weekends with his cousin Julian-he would always tell his Nina, to tell his mom to leave him at her house. Even as an adult he would frequently make the drive to Sac to visit him. E & Jule connected over raiders, fishing & life, these two were thick as thieves. He would also ride along for plenty of trips to grandmas (his “Mama G”) & papa’s house in Lake county & enjoyed chillin with his cousin Mikey. He cherished his grandma Frances & loved quality time with her. He was her “GB”. He loved all his cousins & had flown out to Atlanta a couple months before his passing to attend his cousin Vanessa’s wedding. E also enjoyed watching sports with his “pops” & having real conversations about life.
He loved to sing & dance-the self proclaimed “king of crump”. He loved music. He loved the Bay Area & of course loved his Raiders & Oakland A’s! E loved keeping it lit! He was always down for a sports game, going to grab food, San Francisco, road trips, concert, beach day, Sunday dinners at mom’s, whatever! The best copilot. The best road dog. He loved himself a homemade meal, Reese’s candy, sports, his mama’s macaroons & baking with her-calling himself “chef boy-r-E”. He loved milk & would drink it just because he was thirsty, who does that? He was well known for packing leftovers from his mama’s house, as well as constantly eating my left overs, claiming that “he didn’t think I was going to eat it.” You could also catch E anytime of the day or night, eating cereal out of a tall cup. Ethan just loved being in the kitchen, whether is was in the fridge, being the “taste tester”, cooking, picking at the food, talking to you while washing dishes or eating. I remember multiple occasions him & I burnt tortillas, too busy roasting each other & forgetting they were cooking. E also loved naps & could fall asleep in seconds. You could be mid conversation with him & he’d stop responding-look over at him & he would be slumped!
Ethan had an infectious smile, the kind that could light up any room and loved showing off his deep dimples. As a teenager, he had braces which he would color code to match his fits of the week. He had over 100 hats and would match them to his socks, braces and bracelets. He always had his own style, wearing whatever he wanted, whether it was “in” or not. Often, many things he would wear, would eventually become trendy later on.
Ethan was well known among his family & friends to be full of positive affirmations, words of encouragement and motivation. In some of his final text messages he was sending bible scriptures to encourage his colleague at work. He was so supportive, so enthusiastic & so encouraging. He also had so many ideas.
E had many friends that he considered to be his brothers, his fam. His friends still hold it down for him, check in on his family and show up for him, honoring him & keeping his memory alive. E & Frank were literally like brothers, sharing everything, roasting each other & taking midnight trips to Denny’s. Every year on Thanksgiving morning, E would meet up with his friends for a traditional morning football game. Whether it was getting cut by Jaeden, keeping it lit with Jule, mobbin with Frank, speaking Bosnian & fishing with Enes, growing up with Chris, “in the office” with Chuck & Adrian, vibing with Moises, kicking it with Mike-E loved his brothers.
E gave the best hugs, the type of hug that would fully embrace you & was oozing with love. A mentor to some, a mentee to others. He was a hype man! He had big dreams, big goals & an even bigger heart. He was always learning, always planning & plotting for the future. ALWAYS talking. 😂 Even though he was always talking, conversations with him weren’t surface level. If given the right audience, conversations with him would be deep and insightful. Some of them wise beyond their years.
Ethan planned to eventually go to school for sports medicine or open his own business & clothing line. He spent his final days working at Fremont School District. Working along side his cousins John John & Raul. He took pride in this job, and at the time of his passing was being considered for a promotion. E was also working side jobs doing stucco with John John. While working at FUSD, his mom was also working in Fremont at the time. E would often go meet his mama for lunch. He was a true mamas boy! He was my moms favorite…sushi date.
Ethan’s final days were spent building his credit, building his family, apartment hunting, focused on career growth-getting that shmoney, & simply growing-into a beautiful man, who left us beautiful memories.
Ethan is survived by his mom, sister, stepdad, nephews, niece, several aunts, uncles, cousins, friends & loved ones. He is proceeded in death by his grandfather Juan Canedo & his Aunts- Cruz Madeline Aranda & Lydia Marie Canedo.
We love you E. ♥️ 💩
