“We thought of you today,
but that is nothing new.
We thought about you yesterday
and days before that too.
We think of you in silence,
we often speak your name.
All we have are memories and
your picture in a frame.
Your memory is a keepsake
from which we’ll never part.
God has you in His arms,
We have you in our hearts.
Life story
Joan Askew Siplin, born December 22, 1945, in Norfolk, VA, passed away July 17, 2024. She was the beloved daughter of the late Clarence and Georgia Howard Askew. Joan's educational journey culminated with her graduation from Union Kempsville High School, class of 1964, where she proudly held the position of Salutatorian.
With diligence and dedication, Joan embarked on a career path that showcased her strong work ethic. Beginning as a United States Postal worker, she later transitioned to the banking industry.
A pillar of faith and community, Joan was an active member of Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church in Chesapeake, VA. She wholeheartedly served on the church’s Diaconate Fellowship, Senior Usher Board and was the former chair of the Missionary Circle. Additionally, she served as the financial secretary for both Greater Mount Zion Missionary Baptist and her former church, New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Virginia Beach, VA.
Beyond her church duties, Joan selflessly volunteered for “Meals On Wheels” in the Virginia Beach/Chesapeake area. Her devotion extended to her role as a loving babysitter to her granddaughters, Tiffany and Kayla, and great-grandson, Shamon, who held a special place in her heart.
Joan's legacy lives on through the cherished memories shared with her devoted husband of 40 years, Reverend Dudley “Steve” Siplin, her three loving daughters, Natalie P. Smith, Rolanda Y. Sykes (Leon), Jermaine E. Newton (Dorian), stepson Kenyetta Siplin (Melissa), and twelve precious grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her sisters, Gloria Ferebee of Chesapeake, VA, and Tamma Joyce Holmes of Long Beach, CA, along with a special niece, Dr. Fontaine Ferebee-Johns of Chesapeake, VA, and a host of other nieces, nephews, and countless loving relatives and friends.
Joan's enduring impact on those around her will be remembered with fondness and gratitude.
My favorite memory of me and Gran has to be going to Denny’s after I got a good report card and eating breakfast together! We would go to Macy’s and Harris Teeter all the time, and I’d just follow Gran around like her shadow. Now she follows me around everywhere I go; in spirit, I know she is with me.
