“"This world is so serious, that is why I try to make everyone smile." Bo James
Life story
Bo was the Fire Chief of Galvez-Lake Fire Department. and was in the fire service for 18 years. He was married to Karen Hinson James on April 14, 1995, for 29 years. Bo has 2 daughters Amanda and Melanie, 3 bonus daughters Lynne, Tricia, Catherine (CC), 9 grandkids and 2 great grandkids
Please pray, send well wishes, or whatever you believe in for Bo James and Karen, Galvez-Lake volunteer fire department, and all who love him (which is A LOT of people).
Bo is an extraordinary man who has served his community for many years. When I worked for Acadian and I'd pull up to a scene and Bo and Karen were there it was a breath of fresh air. He always made me laugh, always made everyone laugh and I'm sure he still does today. Having a bad day? Just seeing his smiling face made you feel better.
He is one of the greats. If you have ever met Bo, you know what I'm talking about. If you've ever been in his care, he is kind and compassionate and extremely skilled. He is who you'd want in your time of need. I ask that in his time of need we all keep him in our prayers because Bo would and has dropped everything to help those in need time and time again.
I am better for knowing Bo. I am grateful to have worked along side Bo for as long as I did. I am thankful for Bo's kind heart, big smile, and silly demeanor. Of course he was serious when he needed to be but his antics kept everyone's spirits up which is so important in the first responder line of work.
Thank you, Bo, for being you. 💕
Bo, it’s been beyond an honor to serve with you! More than you brightening our days just seeing your presence, and going above and beyond always. You were the calm in our storm and the reassuring lighthouse to guide us.
But more importantly, it’s your example of fully giving of yourself for others. No matter the time of day, what you had going on, or the circumstances….you were there and it was going to be alright 🥰.
I’ll forever cherish that time you came to warn me “hey heads up, there’s a nurse in there!” and I just smiled at you because it was my turn to show you my tricks 😉
But most importantly, you were my role model. Despite the storms inside my mind, I saw you standing there, not only surviving but thriving out here. You were still so full of life and love to give despite what you have been exposed to. I will honor you by promising to walk in your footsteps and strive my best to make you proud of me. Love you brother.
Karen please read this to Chief:
I remember the first time I met Chief. My oldest son, Tyler, or "Whopper head" as Chief liked to call him, was a Junior Firefighter at Galvez-Lake VFD. I went to pick Tyler up from training one night. The Juniors and Firefighters were training on deploying a hose. Chief asked if I wanted to try and I said sure. At that time, I had no formal firefighting training. I threw the hose perfectly! Chief then asked if I wanted to join the department. I filled out my application and that started almost a decade of every emotion. From the adrenaline rush of fires and a variety of calls and laughter, to tears for the ones we lost along the way. Chief always made everyone smile and laugh. He has made a profound impact on Galvez Lake and Ascension Parish. He has been a huge part of my life from being an amazing mentor, wonderful leader, awesome co-worker, a genuine friend, and my Christmas husband. I always looked forward to playing Ms. Claus along side him as Santa. The look of pure joy he put on everyones faces from the kids, the adults and even the dogs when he gave them their doggy treat from Santa was immeasurable. I am supremely grateful for all of the fun and memorable times we had at the Louisiana Fire Chiefs Association conferences - even our bad encounter with moonshine. I have learned alot from him in my years of being in the fire department. If you knew Chief, he was the human version of the Energizer Bunny - he was always on the go. He could/would not sit still for a minute. From numerous station trainings, Fire District 1 trainings, weekend fire schools, to running numerous calls both day and night - even us dressed up as Santa & Ms. Claus or whatever theme our banquet was that year. He is so passionate about everything - a true leader, very reliable, dedicated and always willing to lend a helping hand. I swear, if there was a way, we would've added a coffee pot to the new Service 50! I can honestly say I am truly honored and lucky to have met you Chief. I value the knowledge and friendship you bestowed on me. I love you and Ms. Karen aka Momma Duck. You have left an everlasting mark on all of the lives you have touched and I truly believe you left an unerasable smile in the hearts of everyone you've encountered. This is not goodbye, it's til we meet again. Love you Chief Bo James!
Fly high Chief Bo James , you will be missed. Thanks for the knowledge, friendship, and all the laughs. We got it from here, big shoes to fill, but we gonna try!
Today is a devastating day for the Ascension Parish Fire Service, for we have lost one of our own.. Chief Bo James of the Galvez Lake Fire Department.
I made a post a few months back with the first photo you see here, mentioning that I was in the company of some of my greatest mentors and some of the greatest fire chiefs in the state of Louisiana. Unfortunately one is no longer with us.
Chief Bo James was extremely committed to serving Ascension Parish. You’d be hard pressed to find an individual who spent more time at the station or ran more calls than Bo and his wife Ms. Karen. They are household names, not only in Galvez, but all of Ascension due to their unending commitment to serving everyone.
No matter who you were, where you lived, or who you knew, Bo was always ready to greet you with a smile and whatever joke he had just come up with. Most everyone had a nickname and like it or not there was no escaping it once he coined you with it.
We will miss you, our friend and brother. As you move from this life to the next, you are now free of the pain and sickness you had here on Earth and have made it to eternal paradise. Until we meet again, thank you for all the laughs, lessons, and service.
We will take it from here, Brother. Your work is done. Rest in eternal peace.

In memory of Mr. Bo James. A man of upmost integrity. Anyone that ran a fire call or medical call with him would tell you that he taught and led by example. He treated each call equally no matter what. It was never about what the fire department could give him, it was about serving his community and it showed. I was honored with the pleasure of running many of calls with Mr. Bo and the knowledge he poured into me, I am forever grateful for. You left a legacy that will be hard to match. Rest easy; you deserve it. 😔
“ It’s in Galvez. Bo will be there!”
Nearly every call I’ve run on Acadian 62 in Galvez over the last 8 years my partner heard me say this. And he was! Bo served his community like no other and gave more than anyone could ever ask of him. He was selfless, dependable and ready to do everything in his power to help. He frequently said that he knew that if we were on scene with someone that they were more than likely having a bad day. He would then say “ if I can make you laugh then it’s one small thing I can do to make you feel better. Everyone can use a good laugh!” His jokes were always welcome and his cheerful personality contagious.
I was fortunate enough to know Bo for 8 years and I always considered him a friend. He was the person I called when I had a question, needed a favor or needed a hand. He was always willing and eager to help anyone with anything. He loved spreading cheer to any and everyone he came in contact with. Even if he didn’t already know you….that wouldn’t last long.
Rest in peace Bo. We’ve got it from here. He is now with the Lord and with us in sprit and looking down on us as we continue serve Ascension Parish….. So I will continue to say…..
“ It’s in Galvez. Bo will be there!”
Rest easy Chief Bo James! We are going to miss you! We promise to look out for your Karen Hinson James. You both have done so much for our community. It’s in my heart now to truly be a volunteer! The integrity you have shown to so many and the giving heart pretty much sums up the great leader and friend you were to so many! Our #1 Santa at Christmas time! 💙😇
Man we really lost a good one yesterday. Chief Bo James was a one of a kind type of guy who always made anyone’s worst day seem like a great day. He was a firefighter’s firefighter who would be there at the drop of a hat for anyone in his community and was quite the funny man too. In the 16 and a half years that I have been around the fire service, he has always been one of the most sincere gentlemen I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. In the 4 and a half years I have been with Acadian on the EMS side, I knew that every Galvez Lake call I responded to, Bo was gonna be there to make things better for everyone.
Friends and neighbors, I’d like to ask each and every one of you to keep the Galvez Lake fire community and personnel in your prayers as they go through this tragic time and especially be in prayer for his wife Karen Hinson James and their family.
Rest easy Chief!! We have it from here buddy!! We love you!! #FD500
This one hurts, Chief Bo James was always a light in the dark. He would always find a way to make everyone laugh or smile regardless of the seriousness of the situation. May he rest easy knowing he improved the lives of not just the citizens he served in the Galvez-Lake area, but also those he worked with including myself. To his wife Karen, and his family along with the Galvez-Lake Fire Department, I send my condolences. May ya'll find comfort that his legacy is one of spreading positivity and selfless service. Rest in Peace Chief.
On Tuesday, September 17, 2024, I had the profound honor of capturing the moments that truly mattered as we gathered to celebrate the life and legacy of Chief Bo James. This was not just a funeral but a deeply moving tribute to a man who shaped and uplifted our entire community. Bo was more than a leader; he was a mentor, a friend, and a beacon of unwavering strength and compassion. He touched so many lives, including mine, in ways words can hardly describe.
As I stood behind the lens, I felt the weight of his impact, reflected in the faces of those who came to pay their respects. The unity, love, and admiration were undeniable, a testament to the man Bo was and the legacy he leaves behind. From the procession to the final goodbyes, every moment was a reminder of his selflessness, courage, and devotion to the people he served.
It was a privilege to capture these sacred moments — to preserve not only the sorrow of loss but the beauty of his life’s work and the love that surrounded him. My hope is that these images will stand as a timeless reminder of Chief Bo James, whose spirit will continue to guide and inspire us for generations to come.
Rest in peace, Chief Bo. You may be gone, but your legacy will live on in our hearts and in this community forever.

DEMCO Salutes Fire Chief of the Galvez-Lake Volunteer Fire Department Byron “Bo” James. Chief “Bo” was a great friend of the co-op and consistently offered valuable partnership opportunities for DEMCO and his department. We thank him for his service and cooperative spirit. Our thoughts and prayers are with all who are missing him today.
I am tremendously saddened by the passing of my dear friend and partner to the Sheriff's Office, Fire Chief Bo James. Bo was more than a colleague - he was a brother in service and a great leader in our community. He was a man whose courage and compassion touched countless lives, always putting others before self. Thank you, Bo, for helping protect Ascension. Your legacy will live on in the hearts of all those you served and loved.
As we wake this morning, we prepare our teams to get ready to make several trips to Florida after the raging storm of Hurricane Milton that hit that area just less than 12 hours ago. We all pray and wrap our arms around our relatives, our friends, our brother firefighters and law enforcement in the state of Florida. We also pray for every resident that had to go through that terrifying experience last night, as Milton came a shore and dropped water and alerted over 130 tornado warnings during the night across Florida.
But today, we also remember that just four short weeks ago, our brother here in Ascension Parish took his last breath here on earth and entered eternal Life. Could you imagine how our brother Chief Bo James of the Galvez-Lake Volunteer Fire Department felt when he closed his eyes here for the final time and when he opened his eyes again, he was in the kingdom of heaven, no pain, no suffering, no worries, no controversy, no battles, no wars on each other. Just the beautiful smell of flowers everywhere and an atmosphere we all look forward to going one day.
In the last four weeks, I listen to our fire department radio daily here in Ascension Parish, and I have been praying for just one more, “FD-500 dispatch, I’m enroute to the station to get an apparatus”, “FD-500 dispatch, that’s going to be an Acadian Ambulance call”, “FD-500 dispatch, can you make sure Air Med, Atmos or DEMCO is enroute to this call please.” “FD-500 dispatch, show me enroute to that area of the Parish, until we here from that fire department, that was dispatched”.
But most of all, I miss the daily jokes he would tell us at the Fire Board Meetings, Mutual Aid Meetings and the Chief’s Association Meetings. I miss the contagious smile he had every day when you would see him. I miss the calls where a 68 year old man would run circles around those 25 year old volunteers. I remember just less than a year ago, when the wildfires were threatening homes in a Galvez neighborhood and he stayed up for days around the clock without any sleep in that neighborhood, making sure no ones home was touched by the wildfire. I remember going meet with him after day 5 of that call and saying Bo, you got to go home and get some rest, we have twenty volunteers here to take your place while you sleep, and yes it took twenty of us to take just one man’s place.
Karen James, you have been a solid rock through all of this, and I find that several days over the past four weeks that you were so strong that you comforted us more than we could have ever comforted you. I still remember the one on one conversation that you and I had four weeks ago today, and you looked me in the eyes and said James, I just want to be able to put on a dress and go see my husband for the last time and not have to worry about all the details that come with a firefighters funeral. I’m so proud of everyone involved, everyone that played a part, everyone that brought food, everyone that drove a truck, everyone that raised a ladder and a flag, everyone that stood next to our brothers casket without even blinking an eye, everyone that rang that bell for the last time, everyone that became close brothers that day and for everyone that carried our brother to his final place of rest.
My brother Bo, you been gone today just four short weeks and we have already had Hurricane Francine, Gordon, Helene, Isaac, Joyce, Kirk and Milton, with Hurricane Nadine expected to hit one of us next week. Just know my friend, things are not the same without you, you were always here to assist with fighting these battles with us.
From the entire Fire Service of Ascension Parish and the State of Louisiana, we want to send our strongest prayers to the Karen James Family and the members of the Galvez-Lake Volunteer Fire Department.
Chief Bo James had a unique quality in that he could make anyone feel special.
Chief Bo James you have indeed made the supreme sacrifice to make the quality of life better for all of us in Ascension Parish and the State of Louisiana. May you rest in peace for eternity knowing that you have a beautiful family to carry on the love and continued sacrifice that you made every day you opened your eyes.
To the entire Karen & Bo James Family, and the Galvez Community thank you so much for sharing Chief Bo James with this community. We are all better community, because of Chief Bo James - Love, Determination and Loyalty.
REST IN PEACE OUR BROTHER! – WE WILL CARRY IT FROM HERE
