William and Jane's son James Latta Rutherford was born at Helena Hospital, Shorncliffe Camp, Sandgate. Helena Hospital was situated on Hospital Hill, it was for the families of the soldiers stationed on the camp. James served with the Royal Air Force for 22 years and was married for 46 years to Kathleen Rosemary (nee Thomas) Rutherford.
Their youngest son, Simon Nicholas Rutherford continued the military connection by serving with the Blues & Royals Regiment for 8 years.
