Bruce Edward Petersen
Bruce was born in Des Moines, Iowa and lived here all his life. He and Rhonda celebrated their 21st wedding anniversary in July. He was a proud south-side originally living on SW 15th for 18 years before moving into their present home on porter in April 1999.
Brian Wilson is the son that Bruce didn’t have and was very honored and proud that day in May when he walked his beautiful Baby Lisa down the aisle on his arm. Bruce was excited about what the future held for Katy, who is going to be a famous lawyer some day.
Bruce worked for Downey printing, now known as Quebecor, for 20 years as a pressman. He is actively involved in Graphic Communications Union, and is the union vice president.
Bruce was an avid outdoorsman, proudly displaying several mounted “trophies” collected through the years. One of his notable trophies was a black bear he shot while on a hunting trip to Canada. he left for Alaska on September 2nd with dreams of bringing home a monster moose. He called 5 days into his adventure with the news of the 600 lb grizzly bear he killed.
Bruce would not have wanted us to mourn his death for long, but rather that we celebrate his life by remembering the times we shared with him. To all of us here, in different ways, he was that quiet strength when we needed it, but more than that he was a part of us. The loss, overwhelming at times, is made bearable by the knowledge that if he had the choice, he wouldn’t have picked a more appropriate place…only a more appropriate time.
It somehow seems fitting that we found out about his death on the most beautiful night of the year…the “harvest moon.” The Bruce Petersen that we all know and loved as husband, father, brother, uncle and friend, will always be with us in spirit…if you listen close, you’ll hear him in the cool of the sunset, the warmth of the sunrise, the brilliance of the autumn colors, the crispness of the new fallen snow, the promise of spring, the anticipation of a storm as the thunder and lightning compete for our attention, and the gentle soothing sound of the water lapping the shores during the overwhelming heat of the summer.
Bruce would have wanted us to live our lives today, not the tomorrow, so…….”Scratch gravel….”
