Legacy of Life

On Tuesday, November 2, 2021, our beloved Gail Donice Coles Greene passed from this present life into God’s eternal life while surrounded by her loved ones.

Her life began on June 24, 1955, the daughter of the late John Coles, Sr., and survived by her mother, Malinda Coles Brown. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Alphonso Greene, Sr.

Gail graduated from Charles City High School in 1973 with honors. She was outgoing, popular, smart, and very sociable with many friends. She continued her education by obtaining an Associate Degree in Business. Gail was always a go-getter at sixteen she started working after school for Colonial Williamsburg. Upon graduating, she worked for Charles City County and advanced to a position at Bellwood Defense Supply. After several years, she transferred to the United States Postal Service where she retired with 30 plus years of service.

Gail accepted Christ as her personal savior on September 18, 1966, and was a life-long member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. As a youth, Gail was a member of the youth usher board and youth choir. As an adult, she sung with the Tones of Zion Gospel Choir, a member of Willing Workers and Women Ministry. Gail loved the Lord and was an avid reader. She read and studied the Bible and loved a stimulating discussion at Bible Study.

Gail married the love of her life and became the mother of two devoted children. Daughter, Mom, Sister, Auntie, Nana, Momma, Gail, and Grannie we some of her titles. She loved her family fiercely. She was the sweetest person in the world until she felt that her family was threatened. Then she became protective, brave and blunt. She loved to travel, experience new places and shop; but most of all she loved building memories with her family.

She leaves to cherish her memory: daughter, Jonnelle Greene; son, Alphonso Greene, Jr. (Kristen); six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; mother, Malinda Coles Brown; siblings, John Coles, Jr. (Sherby), Gwen Christian (Urias), Alan Coles, Sr. (Monica), Darlecia Graham and Lawarren Carter (Shyteia); half-sisters, Jenny Jones and Jerry Berkeley; God-children, Lameka and Breone Adkins; uncles, Warren Sutherlin (Queen) and Richard Hatchett (Tina); aunts, Deloris Bluford (David), Maxine White and Elder Lillian Moore; mother-in-law, Alice Allen; and a host of other nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.
