A Mother

There are truly no words to capture the profound grief a mother feels when she loses her son. My heart is heavy, and the numbness I feel is overwhelming as I miss you deeply, Sal. You were such a wonderful son, and I would not change a single thing about you. My love for you began on the day you were born and will continue eternally. I remember the first time you came home from the hospital. I was excited when you met the first-year milestones. I remember when you went to the linen closet and found that you were covered from head to toe with Vaseline—your favorite toys were Thomas the Tank Engine and Hot Wheels. You love to figure out how things work, taking them apart and sometimes not putting them together. You loved video games. I am incredibly proud of the person you have become: a caring, compassionate, and reliable individual. As a friend, you were someone people could truly depend on, always ready to support them. You had a remarkable ability to make your friends laugh and to provide unwavering support. It’s clear how deeply you were loved by so many; your friendships are a testament to the kind and good-hearted person you were. You always looked out for your family and friends, and your bravery as a volunteer firefighter speaks volumes about your character. Your service with the NYPD reflected your dedication to helping others. I find comfort in the words of the book “Love You Forever” by Robert Munsch, which beautifully expresses the love I have for you: “I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you always, As long as I’m living, My baby, you’ll be.” Please know that you will always hold a special place in my heart. Love always, Mom
