Mom
You left this earth too soon and I was not prepared for this loss and the pain caused by this broken heart. I love and miss you everyday mom. Kim
Grace B. Newman, aged 79, passed away suddenly on July 8, 2022. Born on February 23, 1943, in Bryantown, Maryland, Grace was the sixth of seven children born to William H. Butler and Mary Hazel Butler. Her childhood was filled with the joys of small-town life, where she developed a lifelong love of cooking which she learned from her mother.
Grace was educated in the Charles County school system, attending St. Mary’s Catholic Colored School, Malcolm Middle school, and graduated from Bel Alton High School. Grace went on to attend Atlantic Business College, Washington, DC to further her education. She also obtained her associate’s degree from the Charles County Community College while raising two kids and working full-time.
Grace married her elementary school sweetheart, Joseph Newman and had been married for fifty-two years upon his death. Grace was blessed with two children whom she cherished very much.
Grace began her career in the federal government as a secretary and retired as a Senior Intelligence Analyst with the Department of the Army in 2001 after thirty-nine years of dedicated service.
In retirement, Grace was able to spend some quality time with her parents and assist in transporting them to their respective appointments and functions. She was also able to send her grandchildren off to school and attend school functions with them.
Grace enjoyed being a daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. She was extremely proud of her kids and grandkids. She loved being active and sharing family dinners and activities with her family.
Grace had a passion for traveling to places that included London, Panama, Japan, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Alaska, and Haiti to name just a few places. She also enjoyed the theatre where she saw shows like Motown the Musical, Waitress, Les Misérables, The Life and Times of the Temptations, In the Heights and others.
Grace’s legacy is one of love, education, dance and community. She loved to stay active with walking, swimming, tennis, tea parties, wine dinners and spending time with her friends.
Grace had a great sense of style. She was known for her stylish looks and detailed ensembles, and she wore them well. Chico’s was her go to for a fresh new outfit. When she walked in the door, the staff knew her by name.
She loved to dance and when the music played, she would start dancing anywhere she was. For many years, Grace loved attending Jazzercise classes. She would take multiple classes daily six days a week. She was a true competitor, when there was a contest, she was there to win coming home with many t-shirts and other Jazzercise merch. Her children have set up the Grace Newman Memorial Scholarship at Charlotte Hall Jazzercise to honor her memory and bring the joy of dance to others.
Grace’s faith was very important to her throughout her life where she attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bryantown, Maryland serving in multiple functions such as Usher, Eucharistic Minister and as a member of the St. Mary’s Sodality.
She is remembered for being a kind and compassionate person that was great fun to be around.
She is deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
