Life story

Maxine Margaret Tauri was born on the 14th of August 1947 in Tokomaru Bay.

-

She was the daughter of Jury Te Tauri and Ruby Whakataka.

-

She was the 7th in line, and her siblings from Oldest to youngest are, Puhinga, Christina aka Tup, Georgina, Jury aka Boysie, Matua Kore aka Darkey, Te Rangitumai, Maryanne, Lorraine aka Porky, Dean, Denise, Myles, Darcelle, Maitland, Joe, Shona, Marcia, Karl, Riccardo and Cherie.

-

Maxine was also blessed to be whangai’d by Kathleen Whakataka, the sister of her birth mother Ruby.

Which made her the eldest sister to her siblings Darcelle and Lawrence. Notably her sister Darcelle has stated Maxine was a second mother to her after the death of their mum Kathleen.

-

She is the mother of Adrian, Sheldon, Regina, Shaun and Sheryl. And the mother in law to Mata, Maria, Rocky, Jacq and Eddie.

-

And with the passing of her eldest sister Puhinga, she became a second mother to her Tuari nephew and nieces Reuben, Gary, Gail, Sheryl, Rianna, Mox, Baldy, iwi, dean and Terence.

-

She is the grandmother to Cazna, Scoti-lee, Zepelin, Jonathan, Jasmine, VJ, her majesty the queen Sharvorne Maxine, Trei, Kayne, Devante, Jerlyn, Sheldon, Maxine, Iequarne, Roberta, Jamahl, Awhina, Jeremiah, Janique, Ed, Freedom, Shaun and Sheryl.

She is also Nanny Max to Ayanna and Milaani, and many others.

-

Growing up, Maxine went back and forth, being raised by both her mums which resulted in her attending multiple schools.

-

Maxine attended Tologa Bay, Tokomaru Bay and Waipiro Bay Primary School. One of her favourite stories to tell, is the time her and her sister Pork beat up 3 boys and got stood down. The headmaster told them they weren’t allowed to come back until they apologised in front of the whole school and made it clear they weren’t allowed to say why or what they were apologising for. So Maxine and her sister Pork sat on top of the hill looking down at the school and teasing the kids. What they didn’t know was while they were looking down at the school, their mum Ruby was looking at them. And all they heard was “Maxine and Lorraine! Get to school before I come there with a stick!” So on they went back to the school and said that they’re ready to apologise. A special assembly bell was called and Maxine and Lorraine had to stand in front of the whole school. Their apology goes “We would like to apologise and say how sorry we are…for beating up so & so and so & so and so & so!” while pointing at the boys they beat up. The whole school laughed and the headmaster went red.

-

Maxine only attended college for 2 years because she refused to go back to school after liking the money from working in the laundry. This went from a part time job to a full time job with her earning 7 pounds a week.

Maxine attended Ngata College, Waiwhetu girl college and Hukarere Maori girls boarding school.

In between the times of attending Ngata College and Waiwhetu girls, In 1961, her, her mum and the rest of her siblings joined her Dad and siblings that had already migrated to Haitaitai, Wellington.

Then in 1962 they made the move to 23 Russell Road in Wainuiomata.

In the early 1970’s she made the move to Porirua or how she used to state it, “the Capital of Wellington”, with her young son Adrian.

In the 1970’s, she gave birth to the rest of her kids in 72, 73, 74 and 76. And as she used to tell her kids, “I didn’t wanna have any of you fullahs, yous helped yourselves”.

-

In the 70s and 80s, in between raising her family, Maxine would go between cleaning and being a bookie, aka illegal TAB.

During this period in the year of 1985, Maxine met the man she would spend the rest of her life with, Taulauniu Sefulu Tasi Faasao. At this stage of her life, unbeknown to her was the best thing to have happened, Tasi walked into her kids lives and taught them the true meaning of blood making you related and love making you family.

In the early 1990s she then became a support worker for IHC, then in 2005 moved to forensic unit for the Intellectually disabled in Keneperu.

She was the most hard working woman you would ever come across. She worked on every public holiday including New Years and Christmas. She always picked up double shifts and even after working a double, she would get home and work would ring her up asking her if she could come in and cover shifts and even with minimal or no sleep, it would always be a yes.

-

On June 29th 2014, she sadly lost her son Shaun Roderique Te Wiki, her youngest son.

We believe that this was the beginning of the deterioration of our beloved mother, grandmother and partner.

-

She passed away at Lower Hutt Hospital 11th March 2022, with her sister Darcelle by her side.

-

Her final resting place is at Whenua Tapu, in the place she loved and called home, Porirua.
