In Loving Memory of Granny Josie
Tarleton Young Cemetery was Established in 1897 and restored in Memory of Granny Josie in 2021 marked a Historic Texas Cemetery.
In Loving memory of Granny Josie Tucked quietly into the landscape of Austin, Texas, the Tarleton Young Cemetery is easy to miss—but its history is not. Beneath its weathered stones lies the story of early Texas families, hard lives, and a community that refused to let its past disappear. Established in the late 1800s, the cemetery became the final resting place for members of the Young family and others connected to the rural settlements east of Austin. In an era before formal cemeteries and city boundaries, families buried their loved ones close to home, marking the land with hand-carved stones and wooden crosses. Over time, many of those markers faded, broke, or were lost entirely to weather and neglect. As Austin expanded, the land around Tarleton Young Cemetery changed. Roads, development, and time itself threatened to erase the memory of those buried there. For years, the cemetery sat largely forgotten—overgrown, unmarked, and vulnerable. But history has a way of calling people back. Local descendants, historians, and preservation advocates began asking questions: Who is buried here? Why does this place matter? Their efforts sparked a renewed commitment to protect the cemetery. Volunteers cleared brush, documented grave locations, researched family records, and worked to ensure the site was recognized not as abandoned land, but as sacred ground. Today, the preservation of Tarleton Young Cemetery stands as an act of remembrance. It honors the families who helped shape early Travis County and affirms that even the smallest cemeteries carry stories worth saving. Each restored stone and recorded name is a promise—that these lives, once nearly forgotten, will not be lost again. Preserving Tarleton Young Cemetery is more than protecting graves. It is preserving identity, lineage, and the quiet truth of Texas history—written not in textbooks, but in the soil itself.
