Edward & Helen Hicks
Helen Berry Hicks and Edward “Junior” Clyde Hicks built a life rooted in faith, family, and the Emory community of Washington County, Virginia.
Helen was born January 15, 1930, in Newland, North Carolina, to George and Louranie Berry. She passed away on June 21, 2013, at age 83, surrounded by family at her home in Meadowview. Helen was a steady, caring presence who loved her family fiercely and took pride in a home where people felt welcome. She was of the Baptist faith and attended Little Rock Baptist Church. Helen worked at Emory & Henry College and retired in 2002.
Edward “Junior” Clyde Hicks was born August 23, 1936, in Boone, North Carolina, to Charles and Susie Hicks. He passed away on March 28, 2023, at age 86, at his home surrounded by family. Known to many simply as “Junior,” he was dependable, humble, and the kind of man who showed love by showing up. He worked for Wright Equipment, later sold to Meade Equipment, serving the community through the John Deere business and the people who depended on it.
Together, Helen and Junior raised a family that remains their proud legacy. Survived by their children Joyce Testerman (John), Lois Williams (James), Earl Hicks, Henry Hicks (Joyce), and Baxter Hicks (Violet). Their son, Kenneth “Kenny” Hicks, passed away in 2020, after Helen’s passing in 2013 and before Junior’s passing in 2023.
Their legacy continues through their grandchildren and the generations that followed: Angie Price, Tina Widener, Michael Hicks, Aaron Hicks, Alicia Hicks, Tonya Paquette, Lou Testerman, Seth Testerman, and Jed Williams, along with many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren who carry forward the values they lived every day.
Helen and Junior are remembered for their faith, their work ethic, their love of family, and the way they made people feel like they belonged.
