Portrait of Gavin Sidney Dawes
In loving memory of

Gavin Sidney Dawes

September 19, 1955 – October 11, 2008
Lived 53 years
Warwick Lawn Cemetry, Warwick Queensland · Warwick, Queensland
Life story

Gavin Dawes, son of Sid & Joyce, husband to Denise for 33 years following a school romance from age 16, a loving father to Michael & Rebecca, & brother of Malcolm & Lynette. Treasured Son-In-Law of Mervyn & Joyce Hammond.

Gavin loved a joke & a leg pull. He entertained his family & friends on a regular basis - for example every Wednesday night a group , including Gavin & Denise, went out for dinner. Gavin could supply the comic relief every time.

He was always good for a one-liner, like “Bec, didn’t you see that car before you hit it?”.

Gavin’s love for Motor racing is well known. His passion started when he visited Expo 88 & saw a go-kart frame mounted on the wall in one of the pavilions. On returning home he made a go-kart at the factory & Gavins racing career started.

Denise had only one “love” to compete with and her name was “Morgan” - Morgan Park. Morgan Park Raceway was Gavin other passion. He and the crew took a poor dirt track race track to a supper bitumen track which is in constant demand all year.

Gavin built his own sprint car from scratch - a green Holden Gemini-, and his passion continues with with kids Michael & Rebecca.

Gavin attended Primary school at Emu Vale primary QLD, and

High School at Killarney High School QLD to grade 10. Left at age 16.

His first job was on the railway. Then worked making cattle crates. Next movement was to Warwick Bacon Co. (John Dee) at around 20years old. Gavin worked at John Dee for 31 years.

Gavin was an invaluable member for the Warwick SES for 17 years. Gavin was not a large man, but was wiry and very strong. On any SES activation or exercise he would be the first on the roof, or the first up

the hill with his vertical rescue gear. And his sense of humour always came to the force to help de-stress his mates in often stressful situations.

Gavin was fortunate to have a large circle of friends, if you were fortunate enough to have had Gavin as a friend, you are extremely lucky.

19 September 1955 - 11 October 2008.

Stevens (QMROA) VISITORS: Nil The Queensland State Council Chairman, Mr Paul Overell, opened the meeting at 8.01 pm and welcomed Delegates and Visitors. 04-0810-006- 5563 The Late Gavin Dawes Delegates noted with sadness the recent death of Gavin Dawes, Gavin passed away after a battle with cancer during which he maintained his interest in, and his contributions to, motor sport. Gavin Dawes is survived by his wife Denise and their children Michael and Rebecca. Gavin Dawes was the Vice President of the Warwick District Sporting Car Club and was also a Life Member in recognition of his multiple decades of involvement in and support of the Warwick District Sporting Car Club. Gavin commenced his motor sport involvement in a vehicle best described as a ‘home made kart’, was a founding competitor in ‘Short Circuit’ events which became immensely popular amongst clubs in the Darling Downs area of Queensland and was a driving force in the resurgence of ‘Supersprints’ at Morgan Park Raceway. The present status of Morgan Park Raceway owes much to Gavin Dawes arising from Gavin being one of the most significant contributors to the creation of the circuit as we now know it, Gavin and the small team with which he worked transformed Morgan Park Raceway from an unsealed venue into what is arguably Australia’s finest Club Circuit. This State Council extends its deepest sympathies to Gavin’s wife Denise, and to Gavin’s family and friends.
