Our hearts are saddened by the Promotion to Glory of Major Harvey Roy Canning after a short illness in his 77th year on April 6th, 2023. Major Harvey was predeceased by his parents Ethel and Bruce Canning, missing brother Andrew Canning, brother-in-law Cedric Mills and sister-in-law Major Rose Canning. Left to mourn his passing are his wife of 52 years, Doreen, and children Todd, Trent (Christa) and Trinette Canning. Papa will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Katelyn, Kyle and Kassie Mae. Also left to mourn are his siblings Gilbert (Lyda) Canning, Clifford (Shirley) Canning, Tony (Glennys) Canning, Major Maxine (Woodrow) Boyde, Major Edward Canning, Leona Mills, Rosena (Grant) Philpott, and many nieces and nephews.

Harvey was born in Bridgeport, Newfoundland and Labrador. He entered The Salvation Army College for Officer Training in St. John’s in June 1967. In 1969 he was commissioned as an officer of the Evangelists Session.

Majors Harvey and Doreen Canning accepted many assignments in The Salvation Army in Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Alberta serving as Corps Officers (Pastors), Training College Personnel and Chaplains. Together they completed 42 years as active Officers, retired in September 2009 and made Cambridge, Ontario, their home. During Harvey’s retirement, he served as Coordinator of The Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Campaign for 12 years and worked with many wonderful volunteers in Cambridge, Ontario. His ministry was always focused on others and showing people the love of Jesus.
