Skylar Mackenzie Hill
“You know my treasure that I’m never going to leave behind? My family” - Skylar, age 7
Skylar fought neuroblastoma for 5.5 years and passed away July 2023 at the age of 7. Skylar wished more than anything that cancer was extinct and unicorns existed instead. Cancer was a chapter of Skylar’s life but it wasn’t her whole life and it isn’t what she should be remembered for.
Skylar was known for always wearing a sparkly, colorful dress and always having a smile on her face. She loved unicorns, rainbows, princesses, and both board games and video games. She lived every day to the fullest and was wise beyond her years. She loved her family more than anything, especially her brother, Graham, and her sister, Parker.
Skylar had the biggest heart and was constantly giving people jewelry, crafts, and cards that she made. So many nights she would leave her parents something she made, like a necklace or bracelet, with a card she wrote and decorated on their nightstand to find when they went to bed. An entire shelf behind the register at Mei Mei’s Cookies and Creamery in River Falls, WI showcases all of the art and gifts she gave Mei Mei over the years when she visited.
Skylar’s huge heart and outgoing personality was seen in all of the compliments she would give people. She went to NYC several times for treatment and while walking on the busy streets she would be constantly yelling out compliments to people passing by. “I love your puppy!” “I love your purple hair!” “I love your dress!” Most people had headphones in and were in a hurry but it never stopped her from repeating it even louder before moving on to the next person.
Skylar loved to pull pranks and be silly. For Halloween when she was 6 she dressed up as a light up skeleton and hid behind her hospital door and called for her nurse. When she came in she jumped out and scared her. She loved to tell jokes, even making up her own. No matter what those jokes were, they were always hilarious to Skylar and her laugh was so infectious that everyone else would end up laughing too.
Skylar’s absence leaves behind a gaping hole with her family, her friends, the River Falls and Westside Elementary community, and her found family at Children’s Minneapolis where she received most of her treatment. We remember Skylar with every butterfly, every rainbow, every heart, every princess, every unicorn, and in every kind and silly moment.
