Lonnie & Mary
Watkins
Lonnie Watkins was born a True Bluegrass Man on September 28th, 1926, to Ambrose and Ada Handy Watkins.
In Wilkes County, NC.
He lived a simple life of helping his family, from working on cars, cutting trees, to running a little moonshine still to make ends meet.
In 1944, he worked repairing ships in
Norfolk Virginia when he was enlisted to serve his country.
He served from 1944 to 1947
as Private First Class, Military Occupational Specialty Truck Driver light.
Something he never talked too much about.
Marry Lou Watkins was born a True Bluegrass pioneer woman,
On April 20, 1938, in Wilkes County to Howard Denver and Britty Barker Cockerham.
She was a homemaker by nature, always helping her family, from cooking and cleaning to helping pick tobacco and such in fields.
Lonnie & Mary were
Married
January 25th, 1955.
Moving to Maryland to provide for their growing family.
Lonnie worked at a sawmill, making 4.00 an hour that provided for Mary, himself, and their 14 kids.
A Mom & Dad who lived for nothing expensive, or fancy, but provided a home like no other for their 14 kids.
Lonnie, who helped deliver over half his kids, and never stopped loving his wife and Mary, who never loved another man as much as her husband.
They moved back to Wilkes County NC 1987 to help take care of Lonnie's Mom & Dad.
Not a day you didn't see Lonnie without Mary. Riding the roads, listening to Bluegrass music, going to yard sales, feeding biscuits to their dogs and the birds at Bojangles after their kids had all grown up, or sitting in the Mulberry School parking lot reading the Bible, and watching life in real time.
They adored each other, their kids, grandkids, and Great grandkids.
Mary Watkins was called home Sunday, July 10, 2016, at the age of 78.
Not too long after
Lonnie was FOREVER reunited with her on
Friday, February 17, 2023, at the age of
96.
"One night, as I walked by his house
I thought I heard his song
I heard Mama talking
But Mom had long been gone..
I looked through the window..
And saw God's mighty power..
There sat Mom with Daddy
He was playing the Wildwood Flower..."
