Mary Ann upton
Grandmas Poem: God didn't give me much Just the sunlight in the morning Just the moon at night Just the breeze through my window Just the warm fire light God didn't give me much Just the green leaves of summer Just the white snow of winter Just a little bird's call God didn't give me much Just the breath I'm breathing Just a heart that beats strong Just a warm touch of friendship Just a sign that I belong God didn't give me much Just my home and my family Just my cat and my dog Just the ocean and mountains Just the dear word of God God didn't give me much Just a son who died for me Just an end to my strife Just a home up in heaven Just a promise to life
Mary Ann Upton, daughter of Albert and Dorthea ( Scott ) Heinold, was born on February 7, 1935, in Salem, MO. She attended local schools and graduated from Houston High School in 1954 before embarking on a fulfilling journey in life.
On May 29, 1954, Mary united in marriage to Robert Upton in Cabool, MO, and together they welcomed five children into their family: Dan, Roger, Don, Robin, and Robert. As a devoted homemaker, she invested her heart and soul into raising her children, cheering on their sporting events and activities with unwavering pride. Mary found joy in crafting and quilting, pursuits that allowed her to express her creativity and care for those she loved through her handmade gifts.
Mary's professional journey began when she moved from Missouri to Omaha, where she graduated from Anthis Beauty School and worked at a salon in the Woodmen Tower. In 1971, the couple moved to the farm in Boyer, IA and Mary became known as the "Neighborhood Beauty Shop." Mary decided to further her education in Fort Dodge and took on a new role as a Restorative Aide at the Odebolt Nursing Home, where she touched the lives of many through her skills and compassion.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Mary was a passionate Nebraska Husker football fan and faithful member of the Lutheran Church. Her personality was cherished by many; she was known for her warmth and generosity. Among her friendships, she shared unforgettable moments with Nancy, Jolleen, and Marilyn, playing Bingo and Yahtzee together. In her later years, she embraced the spirit of adventure, traveling with her best friends through the picturesque states of the Northwest. One of her proudest moments came when she realized a lifelong dream by dipping her feet in the ocean, an experience that brought her immense joy.
Mary's culinary talents were remarkable, and she was recognized as an excellent cook, a skill that embodied her nurturing spirit. Throughout her life, she created countless memories for her family and friends, leaving behind a legacy of love and dedication.
Mary passed away at Elm Crest Nursing Home in Harlan, IA, surrounded by her family, on September 6, 2024, at the age of 89 years, six months, 30 days.
