Life story

Benjamin R. Hodgin was born in Jefferson County, Tennessee on the 5th of October 1845. He moved to Iowa in 1861. When he was 18 years old he enlisted on July 29, 1863 as a Private in the the 4th Independent Battery Iowa Light Artillery. He was living in Glenwood, Iowa at the time. He was mustered out on July 5, 1865 at nearly two years of military service. He later married and 5 children were born to the family. Katie, Nellie, Alice, Ethel and Harvey. In 1904 the family moved to Quincy, Washington from Hillsdale, Iowa. A load of their personal effect arrived on April 8, 1904. The family followed their belongings and arrived on May 6, 1904. They took up land south of Wincester. They hosted a dance at their home on Wednesday June 17, 1904 presumably to meet and get to know others in the area. Their home was a few miles south of town. After a long lingering sickness Benjamin passed away in Quincy, Washington on July 27, 1910. He is buried in the Quincy Valley Cemetery.
