Life story

John Raymond Lauer Obituary

John Raymond “Jack” Lauer, of Shrewsbury, died peacefully on July 28, surrounded by his loving family. Jack was born October 29, 1928 in Ashland, Pennsylvania to Raymond and Elizabeth Miller Lauer. Jack was an Eagle Scout as a lad and worked in the family hardware and plumbing supplies store in Ashland. He was a United States Navy veteran, a graduate of Muhlenberg College and, afterwards, joined the DuPont Company where he spent his entire career, retiring in 1986 as Senior Marketing Manager of the Textile/Fibers Division in New York. After an early retirement, he spent the next twenty two years at Fair Haven Hardware doing what he enjoyed most: telling stories and solving problems. Jack was well known in town for his fine wit and extensive collection of often ribald, but rarely vulgar, stories.

Jack met the love of his life, Lillian Ross, “up home” in Ashland and they remained happily married for nearly 60 years until his death. In 1967, when DuPont asked Jack to relocate to New York, he and Lily discovered Fair Haven, which Jack labeled “a nice little corner of the world”; and there they spent nearly 40 years, raising a family and enjoying the friendly coastal community they had found.

Jack was a communicant of Nativity Church, Fair Haven where he served as an usher and lector for some 40 years. A past member of Surfrider Beach Club and the Root Beer and Checkers Club in Red Bank, Jack especially enjoyed get-togethers with his “Old Boys Club”. He enjoyed reading and composing poetry and often marked a special occasion with a freshly penned verse. He was an avid sports fan, carefully marking the progress of the Yankees, Giants or Penn State but paying particular attention to his grandkids athletic endeavors, rarely missing an event. Jack was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be greatly missed by his family, his many friends and all those who remember the affable, curiously literate guy at the hardware store.

Besides Lily, Jack is survived by three children: Kristin Murphy and her husband David, John Lauer and his wife Kim and Elizabeth Drummond and her husband John; six grandchildren: Sarah Murphy Kiley and her husband JB, Emily Murphy Billington and her husband George, Wilson Murphy, Jack, Scott and Abigail Drummond; and five great-grandchildren: Gavin, James and Owen Kiley and Henry and Casper Billington.
