Life story

On February 13th, 2024, Heaven got a little louder! Affectionately known to all as “Grandma Cheryl,” Cheryl Coombs Evans left this earth on a new adventure. She was born in Payson, Utah on November 25, 1957. She grew up in Santaquin, Utah. Cheryl was raised with three brothers, of which she was the toughest! The neighborhood boys always picked her first to play sports because she was very athletic and did not back down. She met her forever sweetheart, Gary Evans, and got married at the young age of 17. Her parents had to sign permission to let her, but they did not hesitate because they knew they belonged together. They have been married almost 50 years!

Cheryl played volleyball and softball. She loved coed softball; she was the oldest on the team and everyone on the team called her “Mom.” She could hit down the third base line farther than most men but could only make it to first base because she had worn her knees out sliding into bases! She coached her girls in softball for years. She would bribe the team to get on base or steal by doing cartwheels if they made it to third! Cheryl made everything fun and was the life of the party. She was a labor and delivery nurse for over 30 years-if you had a baby at Payson hospital you knew her! She loved her job and was excellent at it. She started teaching fetal monitoring to rural hospitals in Utah. She would plan and put on conferences for hundreds of people. For fun, she started mud racing in a 2wd dune buggy! She co-founded HMRA Hometown mud racers association. They worked with cities to put on mud races. For over 20 years she had a hand in committees, rules, and production. She made lifelong friends.

Cheryl loved to camp! She would go three days earlier and stay three days later than everyone. She loved sitting around a good campfire. She liked to deer hunt but was not a great shot! It often took 3-4 shots before she would hit (I think it was a ploy to entertain her nephews and grandsons!) She played a mean marble game, and she gave no one a break! Being on an adventure was her favorite thing. Sand dunes trips, jeep trips, road trips, ghost towns and old cemeteries, Scotland, Disneyland, Florida, she loved to just go! She loved reading books and history. She had knowledge of random facts from history that she would share with you whether you wanted it or not!

She loved her family with all her might. She considered most people family, and always had a smile on her face. Her laugh was contagious and loud! She was the best supporter, going to ball games, wrestling matches, soccer games, and anything else her family was doing. She just wanted to be there! I could go on and on about this lady! She was entertaining, a fighter, a lover and just an all-around amazing soul.

She leaves behind her husband, Gary Evans, three daughters and son in laws, Kendra and Brett Wood, Danna and Andy Roylance, and Sami and Garrett LaDelle, four grandsons, Heston Wood, Dawson Wood, Garrison Roylance, and Knox Ladelle.

A special thank you to Brandt Esplin, MD, PhD and team, and the LDS Hospital Intensive Care unit for their support and care.
