Mary Joann Albright
Mary Joann Little came into this world on January 2, 1934 (1-2-34) to Floyd and Sue (Reeves) Little in Delaware, Oklahoma. She has one brother named Sydney. During WWII, the family moved to California so Floyd could work on the shipyard. After the war, the family moved back to Oklahoma. Joann's family moved often during her childhood. She recalled one residence that was more than an hour bus ride from her school.
Joann met Oakley Albright in August 1954 and was married in October 1954. Oakley was a roustabout and the young family also moved quite often. They had a total of 6 girls. Shirley and Judy were born in Coffeyville, Kansas. Peggy was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Mary was born in Winfield, Kansas. Sherry was born in Clinton, Missouri and Kathy was born in Kansas City. Oakley got a permanent welding job with KCP&L at the LaCygne, Kansas station. They bought 40 acres just north of town and built a home. All the girls graduated from Prairie View High School. Oakley and Joann remained married until Oakley's death in 2008.
Joann took great pride in raising her girls. With her stern yet loving parenting style, she successfully raised six amazing women. The girls live within 45 minutes of each other. They still get together for holidays and birthdays. Joann instilled the importance of family to all she touched. Joann has 9 grandchildren and at the time of her passing 11 great grandchildren. Since her passing, three more great grandchildren have been born.
Joann worked as a cook at Prairie View High School for many years before retiring to work on china painting with her friend Hazel, crocheting and playing with grandchildren. Community involvement and service was a cornerstone throughout Joann's life. She became involved in Royal Neighbors of America while living in Grandview and continued her involvement after moving to LaCygne. Joann held many leadership roles and donated thousands of hours of volunteer time helping other, especially children. She enjoyed helping with the ham and bean dinner in conjunction with the Firefighters Auxiliary Community Care Program. It was held annually to raise money so local area children could have a better Christmas.
Joann was loved by all she met with a smile that would light up a room. Although she is notorious for not smiling in photographs. She left the world a better place and instilled love, family values, and giving spirit whose legacy will be passed on for years to come.
