Bubba The Great
Why be ordinary, when you were meant to be extraordinary!
If you notice our family feeling extra sad or mad or exhausted or puffy eyes… we have a very big reason.
Our goodest fur baby, Bubba the Great went into a sudden medical emergency late Wednesday night. At 1:30am Thursday, I realized this was serious and he needed immediate attention. He was showing irregular behaviors that I couldn’t ignore. We took him to the amazing ER Vet in Oakland called OAKVET. They took him right in, he was already in shock from the pain he was enduring and they confirmed my greatest fear: Bubba was in active Canine Bloat.

Bubba The Great
04/19/2020 - 09/24/2026 3:34am
(That dash went too fast)
@ 1:50am Within 20 min we had him temporarily relieved of discomfort and on pain meds to have some time to make a safe and compassionate decision for him.
Giant breeds often suffer a sudden severe bloat and can die within 6 hours… due to his age and his current physical difficulties, his amazing ER doctors at OakVet didn’t think it was wise to put him through an expensive and difficult recovery/anesthetic surgery.
Bubba was our pandemic angel who pushed myself and my children through 2020 & 2021 with beautiful companionship and patience. Halloween 2023 he was hit by a F-150 in front of our house and survived with only scratches. Bubba was our referee when it got amped in our home. He taught us that to be big and black in the world is NOT scary- in fact many times you may be deeply misunderstood and only the amazing people who choose love will know the difference. He taught us to take up space even if we don’t fit- do
your best, but if you’re meant to stand out- you will anyway! Sometimes his head felt heavy and rested on anyone or anything when he needed to- sometimes standing at the dining table. He loved to “hold hands”🙌 He loved to sit on laps even if it felt weird, he had to lean or rest one hip on ya. Bless the folks that endured his fur and drool that always seemed to mark those he loved! He reminded us to slow down and enjoy the sun when it shines ☀️ and to snuggle when it’s cold or dreary.
When we brought home our puppy Rocky last February, he immediately shared his bed with him and snuggled him all the time. He shed some beautiful light on how to be the bestest puppy for our family to his lil brother Rocky.
Love, Protect, & Chill always was his motto.
I told him to find me over the rainbow 🌈when it’s my turn to cross… 💛❤️🩹
He was the greatest gentle giant there ever was and we are heart broken to have had to let him go, but so so so blessed to have sheltered his soul for a while.
He’s not in pain anymore.
“Bubba the Great” was his name officially, originally “Chase” by chance from the family we adopted him from in Indiana.
