Life story

Jean A. Amstutz (1934–2024)

Surrounded by the love of her family, Jean Amstutz, aged 89, peacefully transitioned into the embrace of Jesus on January 11, 2024.

Born at home in Newport, PA, on May 14, 1934, to the late Ray and Alma (Comp) Ulsh, Jean's life was filled with joy and purpose.

Jean shared 49 blissful years of marriage with her beloved husband, Fred Amstutz. Married in 1974, Fred and Jean constructed their first home on Fred’s family farm in Bluffton, Ohio. However, their journey led them to various places, including Oklahoma, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Florida.

Known for her beautiful singing voice and sweet smile, Jean led a fulfilling life.

Throughout the years, Jean embraced a range of roles, such as a school librarian, retail clerk, certified interior decorator, Avon representative, Princess House crystal manager, store owner, and receptionist. Her passion for music was evident throughout her life. She also enjoyed sewing and cooking.

Jean is survived by her devoted husband, daughters Dawn ( Bill) Hamman of Medina, Ohio, and Wendy Burchfield (husband Chuck Gunsallus) of Bluffton, South Carolina. Her legacy continues through three grandchildren: Chad (Leah) Hamman of Cleveland, Ohio, Marc (Alissa) Hamman of Strongsville, Ohio, and Kelly (Armand) Sulter of Whitehall, Pennsylvania. Additionally, she was blessed with seven great-grandchildren. She was Preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Patricia Ellerman, Gloria Ralston and Sandra Guidon. Jean's life was a tapestry of love.

A devout Christian, she often expressed her blessings and eagerly anticipated the day she would reunite with Jesus and regain her beautiful singing voice to sing praises. Her favorite verse was Philippians 4:13.

Jean's love was a guiding light for her family, teaching them the essence of love through her own example. Her kindness and loving smile will forever be etched in the memories of those who knew her.

A celebration of Jean’s life will take place on Saturday, January 27th at 1:00pm at The Stradling Funeral Home in Ephrata, PA. The family will receive visitors from 12:30-1:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association in honor of Jean's legacy.
