Life story

Asher Henry Roberts, 31, of Sunriver, Montana, passed away on August 27, 2026, in Seattle, Washington. Born on October 21, 1994, in Show Low, Arizona, Asher brought a rare blend of strength, gentleness, and quiet brilliance to the world around him.

Handsome, creative, and endlessly inventive, Asher possessed a deeply sensitive heart and an abundant generosity. Though naturally shy, he had a warm, talkative energy when surrounded by those he loved, offering genuine empathy, quick wit, and thoughtful conversation.

At age 16, a skateboarding accident led to a prescription for pain medication that tragically sparked a long, difficult battle with addiction. Despite the overwhelming weight of the disease he carried for years, Asher’s loving spirit, quiet resilience, and innate goodness remained constant. His life was cut heartbreakingly short by a fentanyl overdose. In sharing his full story, his family honors the honesty, complexity, and truth of his journey, remembering the sweet, vibrant person he was beyond his struggles.

Asher is lovingly remembered and survived by his mother, Kara; his adoptive father, Greg; his biological father, Norman Essary; his sister, Emily Tucker; and his brother, Jordan. He leaves behind no children, but leaves a lasting imprint on the hearts of all who truly knew him.

In lieu of flowers, Asher’s family requests that donations be made in his memory to the YWCA of Missoula, MT, an organization close to his heart.

From Sophie Freestone

Rest in peace, Asher. I literally never thought that you could die, and I still can’t believe you’re gone. I’ve got so many amazing memories with you, you were genuinely my closest cousin. I remember a few years ago, I was staying a few nights over at Aunt Kara & Uncle Greg’s, after everybody went to bed, I’d be up watching tv. I remember a few nights, you came out of your room at about midnight and asked if I wanted to hang out. We’d go outside, and you would start a fire, and we’d stay up for hours talking about Jesus, life, philosophy and literally everything else. One of those nights, we saw a freaky UFO thing out over Superstition. You got your telescope, and we looked at it while swapping alien stories. That was my first time looking through a telescope by the way. I remember another time way back when we lived together. I was about 3 and you were a teenager. You had the most amazing treefort ever! It had five stories I think. Anyway, you dedicated a whole level to me. Gave me my own little seat. I felt so special that you didn’t give me some half-@ss level, that you actually gave me a big one that was high up. I’ll miss telling you about my crushes and you teasing me about them too, I always knew you had my back. The last time I saw you, about a month ago, we had another night out by the fire talking about God. We stayed up till about 4:00AM. You had so many things to say about God, and I never told you, but I was really struggling that night, and you helped my faith come back to life, and you comforted me, so thank you. I’m so glad I got one last glimpse of you before you passed, and I’m glad I gave you so many hugs that last night. You also texted me about 2 weeks before you passed. You sent me a near 2 minute voice clip along with a paragraph. I won’t say all that was in it, however I will say the last bit of the text. “Love you, ‘The Sophie’, you are a large spirit. Don’t take less from this world.” I never responded to that text till after I heard your brain was dead, but I did see it, and I deeply regret not answering, but I hope you always knew how much I loved you. God be with you till we meet again, Asher. I sure do love you
