Life story

Gavin Reece Lohr was born Thursday, Aug. 10, 2006, in Altoona. He was the youngest son of Robert E. "Bobby" and Heather Lohr.

As a small child, Gavin was a great story-teller, often providing long, detailed accounts of his garage in Altoona, along with the many Mustangs and monster trucks he had. He would tell us about how fast they would go, how high they could jump and their tires.

Before he could walk, he would knock over everything to park his walker in front of the TV when the music to the Young and the Restless would play. He never watched it, he just liked the music.

He could always tell you which direction to go to get to Dairy Queen.

Gavin began school at Juniata Valley Elementary. On his very first day of kindergarten, he refused to get in line after recess. He was eventually bribed back into the building with gummy bears, which set to tone for his entire school career. Gavin was no fool; he did not see any other child who got in line with gummy bears. We received many phone calls throughout elementary school informing us of Gavin's "antics."

Gavin was also a picky eater. While he would run around the house eating a bag of shredded cheese as a toddler, he would eventually turn his nose up at cheese. Many childhood staple foods never touched his lips. He would not even eat macaroni and cheese. This led to packing the strangest lunches for him. Salads with Italian dressing, cole slaw, jelly sandwiches made with his Gram's jelly. He was double digits before he would even try a hamburger. He would not eat pasta, EXCEPT for Ramen and spaghetti (which he piled high with parmesan). It did not matter that pasta is the same ingredients - if the noodle wasn't spaghetti-ish, he wouldn't eat it. He did like BBQ ribs, the most expensive item on many menus. And defying the very nature of his pickiness, he took a liking to scrapple.

Gavin was a gamer. He took his gaming seriously and had a circle of friends he frequently teamed up with. Before he graduated, he used to play PubG. He was on the PS platform, and he would hoard his money so he could buy cards to make in game purchases. He enjoyed multiplayer shooting games, and GTA. He spent a lot of time planning his builds and telling us about them.

He loved "off-roading" with friends on their dirt bikes, mini bikes and four-wheelers. They spent almost as much time fixing their rides as they did riding them, but they found it worth the work.

When Gavin was little, he idolized his big brother and then he stole his girlfriend at age 5 when Robert became a Marine. He loved hanging out with him. He could spend a whole day in his room gaming, but if Robert pulled in, he would emerge from his room excited to see him. He would jump at any invite to go along with Robert. There was 13 years between them, and as they got older, they got closer.

He enjoyed tormenting Avalee. They would antagonize each other relentlessly. It was always "game on". He would also take her for rides on the tractor and four-wheeler.

He would help his dad with cutting and splitting wood, and working on cars, equipment and his bikes. He would often tag along with his "old man". And like his dad, Gavin was a terrible passenger. He would be asleep within 5 minutes. This also happened when they went hunting together.

He was self-sufficient, learning to cook the few things he liked. He would always offer to make eggs for everyone. His first attempt at brownies was not good, as he used a cookie sheet and the mix didn't even cover it all.

He valued his friends and family.

Gavin was fortunate to go on many vacations and cruises. In addition to vacationing at OBX and Topsail Island, he cruised to Grand Turk, San Juan, Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, St. Thomas, Dominican Republic and the Bahamas. There were many camping trips as well, including a 17-day trip in Virginia staying in 4 different campgrounds.

Gavin was a 2024 graduate of Juniata Valley School District and the Huntingdon County Career and Technology Center.

He was a lineman for Gable Line Services in Huntingdon.

Gavin passed away Sunday, October 19, 2025, in a car accident.

Along with his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandfather, Thomas S. Grazier Jr., his paternal grandmother, Elda J. Smith, brother, Robert T. Lohr, and niece, Avalee Himes, as well as a number of aunts and uncles: Angela Grazier Reynolds, Traci Grazier, Tom and Christina Grazier, Christopher and Kim Grazier, Bonnie (Lohr) and Larry Roher, Boyd "Fish" and Jody Lohr, and William "Rick" and Stacy Smith. Christmas 2025

It's unimaginable that this is how we now celebrate Christmas with you. I remembered the year you woke up and opened every single gift under the tree before anyone else woke up. We left you a few things that represent what you enjoyed the most.

Read at Gavin's funeral

AS LONG AS THERE IS LOVE, THERE WILL BE GRIEF. The grief of time passing, of life moving on half-finished, of empty spaces that were once bursting with the laughter and energy of people we loved. As long as there is love there will be grief because grief is love's natural continuation. It shows up in the aisles of stores we once frequented, in the half-finished bottle of wine we pour out, in the whiff of cologne we get two years after they've been gone. Grief is a giant neon sign, protruding through everything, pointing everywhere, broadcasting loudly, "Love was here." In the finer print, quietly, "Love still is."

Funeral tribute by Gavin's mom

When a life is cut short, we are often consumed with "they will never ever", "why" and "what ifs". As the parents of this amazing young man, we've had these thoughts. It's inevitable. But sadly, there are no answers to the whys, there is no opportunity to put the what ifs to the test, and the never evers will eat your soul. We are so proud of the man Gavin was becoming. He had a great sense of humor, imagination, skills and friends. He was caring and was such a good and fun uncle to Avalee. He was close to his cousins, more like brothers and sisters, than cousins. He was a hard worker; even though Gavin was a leftie he was his dad's right hand. We relied on him for help with so many things. As the little brother, he managed to infiltrate his brother's circle of friends, and became one of them. He wasn't just an annoying brother tagging along. There was mutual respect and love. He would always jump at the opportunity to hang out with his brother, whether it would be hunting, fishing or gaming. Gavin was so many great things, and we will remember them and all of the things he was passionate about. As we've watched him mature, he proved time and again that he was loving, kind, and honest. He was a great kid and we love him. 19 years is a short time, but he lived it well.
