Life story

Karla Magdalena Gamero lived a life defined by love, curiosity, determination, and an unwavering ability to make others feel seen and valued.

Karla Magdalena Gamero, 17, of Edison, New Jersey, passed away far too soon, leaving behind a love that will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Born on October 28, 2008, Karla was a beloved daughter, granddaughter, sister, friend, and student whose kindness, warmth, and light touched countless lives.

Karla dedicated 10 years to Taekwondo, beginning at just 4 years old. Through hard work, discipline, and perseverance, she earned two black belts — accomplishments that reflected her determination, resilience, and strength of character at such a young age.

Karla’s love of learning was evident from an early age, a passion reflected in her achievement as Salutatorian of the First Avenue Elementary School Class of 2023. Her curiosity, dedication, and strong work ethic helped her excel academically throughout her life.

A junior at Edison High School in the graduating Class of 2027, Karla was a proud member of the Latin Honor Society and served as the dedicated Secretary of the Latin Club. Since her freshman year, she had developed a deep passion for studying Latin and greatly valued both the class and her teacher, Dr. Clark. Bright, driven, and compassionate, Karla had a remarkable ability to make those around her feel seen, understood, and welcomed.

In ninth grade, Karla attended The College of New Jersey Artificial Intelligence & Wireless Communications Summer Program, where she discovered a growing passion for emerging technologies and careers in science and engineering. She also participated in The Academy at Rutgers for Girls in Engineering and Technology (TARGET) during both her freshman and sophomore years and was expected to return again in her junior year. Karla genuinely loved being part of these programs. Through these experiences, she deepened her interest in engineering and science, formed meaningful friendships, gained confidence, and became even more excited about the future she hoped to pursue.

In addition, Karla was selected to participate in the S.H.E. Shadow Program during the Spring 2026 semester, an engineering outreach program at Rutgers University that introduces high school students to engineering disciplines, research laboratories, mentorship opportunities, and college resources. Her selection reflected both her exceptional academic potential and her deep passion for engineering and technology.

Karla completed all of her Catholic sacraments at St. Mary’s in Plainfield and volunteered at St. James Camp, where she shared her kindness, patience, and faith with younger children. Her gentle heart and willingness to help others reflected the beautiful person she was.

Karla also volunteered at the Clark Public Library, where she enjoyed giving back to her community.

Karla is survived by her devoted parents, Lizette Chaglla and Joseph L. Gamero and his wife, Isis; her loving sister and brother, Jovie Gamero and Joseph L. Gamero Jr.; her dear grandparents, Jeanette and Carlos Gamero, and Mix Supe and Luis Chaglla; her aunt, Stephanie Chaglla; many loving cousins and their families; and countless dear friends.

Karla had a beautiful smile that could light up any room and a laugh so contagious it brought joy to everyone around her. Even during difficult times, she showed incredible strength and grace. She had a gift for comforting others and making people feel accepted and loved without judgment. Her warmth, silliness, and ability to bring people together made every moment spent with her unforgettable. Karla’s intelligence, determination, and caring spirit naturally drew others to her.

She found happiness in life’s simple joys — boba runs, Takis snacks, Playa Bowls, Chick-fil-A, traveling, and making memories with the people she loved most. Yet her favorite place was at home, relaxing on the couch watching Netflix with her beloved dog, Teddy, who remained faithfully by her side. Their bond was inseparable and deeply cherished.

Though her life was heartbreakingly short, Karla leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, compassion, faith, and unforgettable memories. She also leaves behind the rare gift of creating a judgment-free space where her loved ones felt heard, accepted, and deeply loved. Her family finds comfort in believing that Karla and Teddy are together in heaven — peaceful, joyful, and forever connected in love.
