Life story

To our beloved Papone,

A man’s life is not measured by the years he lived, but by the lives he shaped, the love he gave, and the legacy he leaves behind. By that measure, your life was a masterpiece. The foundation you built stands stronger than stone, deeper than roots, and wider than the generations who now carry your name, your lessons, and your spirit within them.

You began as a stone mason in Italy, a young man shaping the earth with rough, hardworking hands. From the very beginning, you understood something most people never truly learn, that the strongest things in life are built slowly, with sacrifice, patience, and love. You carried that strength with you to Germany, helping rebuild places and lives shattered by war. Then, with courage in your heart and dreams far bigger than fear, you crossed the ocean to America determined to give your family a life filled with opportunity, stability, and hope. And you did exactly that.

You built the home where I grew up with your own two hands, but the truth is, you built far more than a house. You built all of us. Every brick you laid, every wall you raised, every early morning and exhausted night spent working was never truly for yourself, it was for your family, for your daughters, for your grandchildren, and for generations you prayed would gather in your home and make beautiful memories for years to come.

Because of you, we know what resilience looks like, we know the meaning of loyalty, tradition, hard work, honor, and unconditional love.

You were blessed with a beautiful marriage, four daughters, and five grandchildren. A family that became the greatest proof of your success. Not wealth, nor titles, and no amount of possessions could ever compare to what you created through love and devotion. You built a bloodline rooted in strength, bound by love, faith, and our Italian culture. This was your American dream.

You were a true manly man. You were a hunter, a fisherman, a builder, someone who knew how to survive and provide. But to us, beneath all that strength, you were our teddy bear. Your hugs were warm and welcoming, your riddles were wise, your presence felt like home, your love was gentle, your smile was big, and your laugh was contagious.

You were the patriarch of this family, the center of our traditions, the keeper of our Italian roots, and the example we all looked to. Through you, we learned what family means: to gather close, to love fiercely, to work hard, and to stand by one another no matter what.

And even though the world feels quieter without you in it, you are still everywhere. In the walls of the home you built, in the meals shared around the table, in the garden you and Nonna tended to, in every game of scopa and scala, in every cast of my reel, in the tobacco smoke I smell, in every Lord of the Rings movies, in every lesson we carry forward…you are there.

Your hands built more than stone and wood, Papone. They built a future. They built a family. They built a legacy that death itself could never take away. We miss you in ways words will never fully express. There will always be an ache in our hearts where you once were, but there is also overwhelming gratitude for the privilege of having been raised and loved by a man like you.

Til we meet again
