Life story

Banita L. Smith, 56, of Belleville, New Jersey, entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on February 24 after a courageous battle with ALS. She faced her illness with faith, strength, and peace.

Born in Newark, New Jersey, she was the beloved daughter of the late Hector Ramirez and Jean Smith Vazquez and the cherished middle child of three, deeply loving her brothers, Albert Smith and Hector “Tee” Smith, along with many dear relatives and extended family members.

Banita’s greatest joy was her son, Matthew Smith, and their connection was strong from beginning to the end. Family meant everything to her, and she treasured every moment spent together.

She earned her master’s degree in education from Kean University and was a proud member of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Incorporated. For 27 years, she faithfully served as an elementary school teacher at Bloomfield’s Carteret Elementary School, primarily teaching kindergarten and third grade. Teaching was her calling, and she received numerous honors, including Teacher of the Year, touching countless young lives with her warmth and encouragement.

Beyond the classroom, Banita was accomplished and vibrant. She was an All-County softball catcher, and achieved a black belt, one of her proudest accomplishments. She also enjoyed working out at the gym, and loved reading, always ready to learn something new, often earning “you got another certificate,” as family lovingly joked. These accomplishments combined with her faith showed determination and strength that were evident in the courage she displayed throughout her illness. Wherever she went, her radiant smile, genuine kindness, and joyful spirit lit up the room.

A devoted follower of Jesus Christ, Banita was saved on November 16, 2014, though she often said she had loved God since childhood. She served the church faithfully and lived a life marked by prayer, Scripture, and unwavering faith. Her favorite verse was Jeremiah 29:13 (NKJV):

“And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.”

In her final days, when writing became her last form of communication, she expressed her peace and hope with these words:

“I’m not afraid. I’m ready. I’m running to Jesus.”

She will be remembered for her deep love, steadfast faith, and the lasting impact she made on everyone who knew her.

My Bonnie

My Bonnie Since the day I was born and you ran home from school to see me
you were there—
not just a cousin,
but my built-in best friend,
my safe place,
my forever person. Our bond has been inseparable ever since. Our times spent
collecting memories like treasures—
late-night talks,
sharing words of wisdom, Always such fun spirit to be around.
laughter that echoed through rooms
you lit up just by walking in. You were kindness wrapped in grace.
The light of every gathering.
Your smile could soften any storm.
Your dancing—
oh, how you danced—
with joy that spilled into everyone around you. Everyone you came across you loved without judgment and always brightened their day. Your time spent on this earth had so much purpose. A loving Daughter, Sister, Aunt, Cousin, friend and Most of all a Mother. Twenty-seven years shaping young hearts.
A teacher in every sense of the word.
Loved by so many.
Carried in so many souls. And in mine most of all. You were such a role model to me in so many ways I can't even begin to list. Fifty-six is far too soon
for Heaven to call someone home.
ALS tried to quiet your voice,
tried to still your steps,
tried to take the rhythm from your body—
but it never touched your strength. I watched you lose the things
that made up movement and sound,
and yet you never lost
who you were. Strong.
Faithful.
Radiant. I miss your voice the most—
the comfort in it,
the laughter in it,
the way you would call my name. And the moments of singing at the top of your lungs like you were the main star of the show because you were Bonnie you were the star of our world. You held me through my hardest times,
and when the roles reversed,
I stayed with you—
through long evenings and whispered prayers—
just to make sure you made it to morning.
The way you always would do for me. We were supposed to grow old together.
To carry this family
side by side through everything together. It was supposed to be me and you. Instead,
I held your hand
as sunlight poured through the window,
so bright it almost felt holy. At 1:43,
your heart stilled—
and somehow the world kept turning. One. Four. Three. The last message you could send us.
I love you.
I will always love you Bonnie. You left this earth in light,
and I know that wasn’t by accident. Now you are my angel—
still beside me,
just on the other side of the veil. The bond we shared is and will always be so special and dear to my heart. I will forever miss you. I wish there was more I could have done. But you are at peace now. Im sure you already dancing in heaven in a soul train line, playing softball, doing karate, just simply talking your daily walks through the park again. I hope your doing it all. One day we will be together again singing in our hair brushes to Whitney Until I see you again,
Watch over us all
Shine the way you always did. And
Wait for me in the light. 1:43.
Forever. 🤍
