Elgin-Alexander Kirk Fraser
Elgin-Alexander Kirk Fraser was born on April 10, 2004, in Almonte, Ontario, and grew up in Carleton Place. He was the beloved son of Hamish and Victoria Fraser and the "incredible big brother" of Alysston. He was a grandson of Jim and Jean Fraser and of Kirk and Catheren Fachnie.
Elgin was a die-hard hockey fan and the Ottawa Senators' biggest little supporter. When he was nine months old he was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer. He went through radiation, chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant, and went into remission. The cancer returned in January 2007. Through it all, his courage and his love of hockey touched thousands of people, who raised funds at charity events in his honour.
In April 2007, as the Senators prepared for the playoffs, Elgin was invited to a team practice. He skated out onto the ice with his parents and formed a special bond with his two favourite players, Mike Fisher and Chris Phillips. Phillips made a surprise visit to play road hockey with him on his third birthday. Fisher visited him at home days before he died, and they watched a movie and played with cars together.
Elgin died peacefully at home on Saturday, May 19, 2007, at the age of three, with his parents and sister by his side. He had spent his last hours on a mattress in the living room, surrounded by family and friends, watching the Senators win their way into the Stanley Cup finals. His life was celebrated at the Carleton Place Arena on May 24, 2007. Nearly 800 mourners came, and Fisher and Phillips led the procession into the arena. In three short years, Elgin touched the hearts of more people than one could ever imagine.
