Life story
Betty Lorraine Miller, born January 24, 1938, in Conway, Iowa, lived a life defined by family, community, and an unshakeable devotion to those she loved. She grew up in rural Taylor County, graduated from Diagonal High School in 1956, and went on to build a full and purposeful life as a mother, professional, and beloved community member. Over the course of her career she earned two degrees from Southwestern Community College and served the people of Iowa through the Department of Human Services and later the Iowa Department of Transportation, retiring in 1998.
At the heart of Betty’s life were her five children - Kevin, Charles, Curtis, Rebecca, and Kristy - and the twelve grandchildren and even more great-grandchildren who followed. She was the kind of mother who showed up: at every sport, every activity, every milestone. That dedication only deepened with each new generation. She cheered on grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins with enthusiasm. Whether it was a county fair, a school event, or the Iowa State Fair (which she attended for an astonishing 68 consecutive years), Betty was there, rooting for her people and enjoying life. She passed away April 30, 2026, at the age of 88, leaving behind a family who knew, without question, that they were loved.
