Where to begin...25 years of friendship
Martha was magnetic to me when we first met. I loved horses and she could recite pedigrees by heart and know how to breed for confirmation and disposition. She learned this love from growing up as her fathers shadow. Martha said he brought some of the first registered quarter horses to our area back in the day. From then on she rode, showed and bred horses, it was in her blood, so when I met Martha I couldnt get enough. Plus, her and Bill were just the most down to earth folks you would ever want to meet. Nothing fancy, just always welcoming and a really good time. It wasnt long and we were fast friends. From going to horse shows, trading horses between us, horse sales, working at Northern Investment Co. setting up auctions and of course having a few drinks at the end of the day. What I wouldnt give for one more night at their kitchen table in the trailer by Osseo. Anyway when Bill passed away Martha decided it would be very hard to afford and maintain the Osseo farm by herself. I had a pole shed at our farm and I decided to build it into a pole shed house for Martha, along with friends, LeAnn Hulett, Richard Gardner, Beavis, my Dad/electrician, Roy Hanson and more. Everyone helped build her house by installing tile flooring, managing the Amish build crew, plumbers etc. Now, Martha was not so sure about this...she didn't want to be a burden. Of course it was meant to be and I would have never changed a thing. Martha lived with us for 10 years. I miss her and think of her every day. My friend, my confidant, my teacher (everything from canning, gardening, hunting, livestock, you name it) Our whole family misses her but I can say that I'm glad she is reunited now with her family in heaven and at peace.
You old Heifer I miss you !
This is such a great way to pay tribute to our dear friend Martha ! I met Martha many years ago through our good friend Jackie. It took a minute to get past her tough exterior, but once I got to know her, I couldn't help but love her. We became good friend over the years. I always enjoyed her stories of growing up, her jobs, her hardships, her accomplishments, her shenanigans. She was a hard worker all her life. She was one tough lady & she told it like was. No sugar coating anything. Which is one of the things I admired about her. We enjoyed many cocktails at our favorite watering hole "Jackies Inn". She had her own 'spot' at the bar & you better not be sitting in it ! But we wanted to be sitting by her! Listening to her stories, joking around, talking smack ! She had vast knowledge of horses & could rattle out the breeding of any horse that even crossed her path. It was pretty impressive to listen to her.
She had a great sense of humor too, she could come up with some good one liners. I wish I would of wrote them all down. I often visited her at her home & I'd briefly knock before barging in & she'd say... "well come on in you old heifer?" . Now not just anyone can call me a heifer. If Matha Fox called you a heifer you were family, you were a friend of hers & welcomed at her table. I enjoyed those times so much. I miss them. We'd chat & laugh. Sometimes I'd bring kwik trip donuts. One time I stopped in from picking blueberries at Cains. I come in the house carrying a pail of blueberries. I said.. "Martha you want some blueberries". She said... "no i don't want them F#@#KIN blueberrries". I'm like... "Martha, I can put some in a dish for you" . She just said... "no i don't want them god damn things". lol. Just told it like it was ! I miss those visits. She had spunk ! Honesty ! Was truly one of a kind. You don't meet many people like Martha Fox in your life. I am blessed to have known her. I am forever thankful & grateful for her time, her friendship, advise, wisdom, strength & love.
Martha... Thanks for everything! I love you & miss you !
Lisa
