My grandpa❤. I'm grateful that I got to live with him and my Grandma for almost five years. He was one of the people I was most excited to tell I got into the nursing program because he was always proud of my accomplishments and he always believed in me. I will miss him but I'm glad I have some pretty great memories with him.
When my rat died while I lived with Grandma and Grandpa, he told me we could put him in a box and bury him in the backyard. Grandpa dug a hole and everything. It seems silly but it was something that I'll always remember. It was nice to see the sweeter side of Grandpa :)
Also another time I was downstairs and I heard grandma calling for grandpa a couple of times and finally I heard him walk towards her room and say, "If you called me Honey, I might hurry faster."
I have a lot of memories but those are some that really stand out to me because I loved seeing his soft side

Grandpa was always good for a game. We spent countless hours playing his games. He love scrabble, rummy, and trivia to name a few. If we weren't playing games with him we could be found playing games created by him such as chipping the golf ball off the shed into a bucket or shooting a gun that shot foam discs trying to hit a small slit in an ice cream bucket. They definitely kept us entertained though, with the bribe of money if we ever hit the hole or bucket you could find us playing those games many Sunday afternoons.
I remember many Saturday afternoons that grandpa would ride his bike with us to or from Salem, we were so lucky to have a fun and active grandpa.
Many fishing trips definitely come to mind. I remember both ice fishing and fishing in his boat. The most memorable being after he had gone blind but really wanted to take spencer and I so he had us come over and then taught me how to drive his truck with the boat up the canyon. I'm surprised we survived, I had just turned 16, so Spencer was probably 12 and we were taking instructions from someone who couldn't see. Luckily he knew that drive, that lake, and that boat by heart and we made it through the day.
I think grandpa was concerned for the well being of his grand kids. Various times he asked if I needed some money to buy new jeans cause mine had holes in them, he was floored to find out I paid extra for that detail. Another time he wondered if Spencer couldn't afford a hair cut, so he handed him some cash and told him to take care of it. Spencer had the right idea though, he just had his friend buzz his head and banked grandpas money. It was his attention to those little details that made us each feel special. Even this last Sunday as I hugged him before I left he said "are you getting skinny?" Even through his broken blind eyes he noticed a little baby weight I had lost. He sure knew how to make me feel loved and important.

There was the time I was at the hardware store and I hear a name being yelled loudly, I hear it again and think it sounds like grandpa, so I look out of the isle I'm standing in and there is grandpa looking for his hardware helper, they always knew it was him when they heard their name yelled.
I took Grandpa to the bank once to get some money and the manager must have been new, cause he tried to talk Grandpa into a debit card, boy did he hear it. "I'm blind and I'm not going to use any old card, I come here to get my money and you give me my money, that's the way I've always done it, and that's the way I'm always going to do it.
The time he sent Harry with $20 to buy all the toothpaste he could buy with it. He didn't want to be running out of that.
Firing Liz from her medicine job on occasion. Then saying well I guess you can keep doing it.
The times he tried to hem his own sweats with scissors.
The Daniels party where his sisters would dance you would always find grandpa in the hallway disgusted.
The time I asked him if he wanted me to make him dinner for his birthday and he said no, then called a while later and asked where his birthday dinner was.
Grandpa was funny and grumpy but the kindest and most thoughtful person! He cleaned out space in his garage just for us when we lived there; when I asked if the basement had a cable plug, he quickly drilled a hole in the wall and shoved the line through; he bought the tallest toilet on the market for the tall guy I was marrying; he came to watch my sports and told me he was never going to forget the time I hit the home run; he let me borrow his truck in high school when my car broke down; he taught me how to shuffle, deal, and play cards. He made the best popcorn around and was always happy to see me. There are many things to laugh about and remember, but I'm most grateful that he was such an amazing grandpa who loved me and made me feel special, and he gave me the best dad who learned how to work hard, be generous, and love for his family from his dad.
