My brother Lewis

Lewis was born on June 29, 1998 at 5:52am. I remember my dad picking me up and taking me to go see him. I remember this chubby baby wrapped up in a blanket laying in a hospital bassinet. So when I got home, I did what most big sisters would do when they found out they were getting a brother, I packed my little mermaid suitcase and was moving out. I guess after a while I got used to the idea of having a little brother. I realized I could boss him around and make him eat leaves. He played with his monster trucks in the mud and planted the seeds from his hamburger bun in the garden in hopes that they would grow hamburgers. He kept snails in his pocket for safe keeping and liked the way dirt tasted. He was a true boy. Lewis attended school in Williams from kindergarten to twelfth grade. He was a true athlete from the beginning. Our dad coached Lewis for every youth sport. He played for westside little league, where he made the all-star baseball team. He played youth basketball for the blue team, of course. He played youth football for the Colusa County cowboys. He also played basketball for the Sutter Dawgs, where they won two championships. He continued to play throughout high school, he received all-tourney award for basketball his freshmen year. He received three all-American conference awards while playing varsity football and also received MVP of his varsity football team and in 2016, won section championship for basketball. Lewis went on to play football as a tight end for feather river college in Quincy. If you knew Lewis, he probably only packed a pair of underwear and a pair of socks, so my mom packed his bags and he moved out, probably only knowing how to make a bowl of cereal, but he survived. He became a mountain man, he grew out his hair and beard, drank sink water, and rolled around shirtless in the snow. He learned about nature and would hike in his Nike slides. He received all-conference honors and graduated with an associate degree in social sciences. He came home every summer and worked in the fields, slaving away in the heat, he wore long sleeves and a straw sombrero and only ate tuna with corn and Tapatio for lunch. After Graduating from Feather River College, Lewis received multiple offers to play for universities all over the country. He received a full-ride football scholarship for Kentucky Christian University in Grayson, Kentucky as a Halfback. He accepted the offer, and my mom packed his things up and like Lewis would say, “I got dropped off in the middle of nowhere and left.” Which we all knew wasn’t true, my mom held his hand and showed him where his classes were and set up his dorm room, and made sure he had all his favorite snacks and meals. He said every minute of the day was scheduled, from chapel, practice, meetings, weight room, film, what time to eat and what time he had to be inside his dorm asleep. We watched him play football on TV when we couldn’t make it to Kentucky. Lewis was inducted into the Kentucky pro football hall of fame as an all commonwealth team member in 2019 He graduated in 2020 earning his Bachelor of Science degree. He returned home that year, driving over 30 hours with his friends, with no sleep, just determination. His last job was building cattle or property line fences, family friends joked that he had a PHD, a post hole digging degree. He worked hard and lived off the land once again. He camped out at job sites and ate sardines and canned beans. He was terrified of snakes when he was working, so our dad got him these special shin protectors that would protect him from snakes which probably only protected him from catching his pants on fire while he welded. He would come home every day, slam the door open, however, someone does that. Rip the baby gates off the walls and run to the bathroom. It was a routine. His hair was healthier than mine, it was a perfect shade of light brown. Every two weeks he had me undo his braids and brush his hair so he could wash it and have our cousins braid it again. He trusted me to cut his hair, Iv never cut anyone’s hair before and I was so nervous because his hair was his prize possession, he would tell me don’t mess it up, don’t mess it up. Well, one time, I gave him an A-line haircut, and thankfully when it was braided, no one knew, not even him. Lewis lived every day to the fullest. He never moped around after having a bad day, he got up early and tackled the day. No matter if he got one hour of sleep or fifteen minutes he was still up early and on the go. He loved his family and friends and always made them a priority and put them first He was strong and determined and never gave up He was the life of every party, always smiling and laughing He didn’t care what anyone thought of him He would go out of his way to make sure you were okay He spoke his mind He probably checked off everything on his bucket list. My brother Lewis was the best brother anyone could ever ask for, I’m so grateful he was mine. I looked up to him, even being his older sister, he was my idol. I wanted to do everything he did and have anything he had. When we were smaller we shared a room because I was scared of my room. Every night he told me to let him know when I was going to sleep so he could go to sleep too. We had note books of cheat codes for our playstation; I always looked up the cheat codes for the tanks and the guns for him. Whenever we ate spaghetti, he’d have it on his forehead and behind his ears. We weren’t allowed to drink out of those cups with a built in straws because anytime Lewis had one of those cups, he’s spill it all over the counter Lewis was a fighter, as we all know. But me and him were always fist fighting as kids and our mom had enough of it and just let us go at it. I told him that if it wasn’t for me and him always fist fighting he wouldn’t be as tough as he was. As his older sister I felt I should have been the protector but Lewis was my protector, anything I needed he was there, any problems I had, he would solve it. I could always count on him to be there for me no matter what. When I had a problem He always told me kill them with kindness, fuck them! They can’t be mad at you if tip them. So I tipped them, like he said and guess what, they were nice to me after. Lewis always had the right thing to say. He always said he was the smartest dumb ass you’ll ever know. He was well educated, smart and he always knew his way around anywhere but man some of the stuff he would do was crazy, he was wild, but that was Lewis. He was born a wild little boy. They say the second kid is always wild, well if you have met my daughter you would second guess that. Amelia is wild just like her Nino Lewis. Spaghetti on her forehead and all. Lewis was a better parent than I am and always so cautious with her. He would lecture me, he always wanted the best for Amelia. Lewis was my protector and I hope he’s up there protecting Amelia now. I hope that when it’s my time to go, I hope he’s waiting for me with his big smile and his wide open arms at heavens gate and holding a coors light, one for me and one for him. I love you lewis, you are my entire heart and soul.
